Midnight Rose and Hosta Sun Power
How do you display your huecheras?
Very pretty..snapple. Don't you just love the colors and the color stays all summer... Ronna
Looking good, Snapple!
Thanks! Heucheras are almost like a Crayola box of 64.
You better believe it. I never knew all the different colors until I got hooked on them. Ronna
Snapple, I always love combining gold and purple foliage plants and you've got some beautiful (AND healthy!) combos :) I'm getting ready to plant some Pistache and Black Beauty and I'm curious. How much sun do your plants receive? Your photos look really "bright" and since your plants look so vigorous I want to make sure I plant mine in the right location!
I know I keep moving my plants also. Lots of you have the same huecheras I do and they are so much bigger. What is the secret. I think I was thinking they are only for shade and that is way wrong! I moved some to the front yard where they get more sun and they are doing so much better! Where does any one have obsidian planted. Sunny or not? Mine really isn't doing so well. Love the darkness of the plant! Also Midnight Rose. What kind of light? Ronna
The Midnight Rose gets no direct sun, but the shade is what I've heard called "bright" or "high" shade. You can't go wrong with Amethyst Myst. I have it in several spots in the garden and it performs good from full shade to receiving some direct noonday sun. While I don't have any in full sun, I suspect it could handle more than the partial sun it gets here. The Peach Melba gets about two hours of direct noonday sun. As a side note the Hakonechloa grass also gets about 2 hours of direct noonday sun. I have it in several places in the garden and the sunny position is the best clump. The full shade clumps don't do as well. It definitely doesn't like dark shade.
Black Beauty and Pistache sound gorgeous. I just got two new Huechers today. 'Fire Chief' and 'Electric Lime' from Lazy S's Farm. They are two brand new introductions. The Fire Chief is stunning. The Electric Lime is - well - it's green. That's about all I can say ,except the leaves are just huge for a Heuchera. When I get them in the ground I'll post a pic. In my experience it takes about three years to figure a Heuchera out for performance.
Black Beauty and Pistache sound gorgeous.
Well, hopefully they "will" be if I ever get them planted! The spot I've chosen for them is where I have a large, overgrown Hibiscus coccineus http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1872/ which gets too tall and is leaning for the sun. I thought I'd have a chance to dig it up earlier this year but now the darned thing is getting ready to bloom and I don't have the heart to pluck it out of there now :( Plus the spot where I want to move it to isn't ready so the Black Beauty and Pistache will just have to be patient! 'Fire Chief' IS gorgeous! I'm not sure what it is with all the gold foliage Heucheras, they always look "lime green" until you get them planted in the right spot. Plus I think the shade cloth they're usually grown under in the nursery also has something to do with it. I know it took a whole summer for my Citronelle to change its foliage so I'm sure your 'Electric Lime' will do the same once it's planted. Speaking of "bright" or "high" shade, we've been spending a lot of time the past few weeks limbing up and pruning some of our trees to create better light. It's amazing after trying for years to create shade how "dense" the shade has become! I'm thinking there's going to be a lot of plants out there which will be much happier :)
RCN, you are right. I try to raise the canopy some every year. It makes a big difference. Haven't done it yet this year. Only downfall is now weeds grow where they previously didn't. But it's worth the extra weeding to be able to grow Peonies and Roses in the shade.
Okay thanks a whole lot everyone. /will move the poor midnight rose where it is now in the garden. To only shade. That will make the poor guy happy. ;) Ronna

Midnight Rose and Hosta Sun Power
Snapple -- how much sun do your Sun Powers get?
I am attempting to do the yellow and Purple too... but i think mine get too much sun. This is my first year for them, only had them since June.
Terese
Terese, I have Sunpower Hostas growing in both sun & shade and they do well in both spots. The sunny ones do need more water.
Here the Sun Power / Midnight Rose combination gets bright open shade. The big old oaks are limbed way, way up. I have a couple of Sun Power in sunnier places but they seem to leaf scorch a little, maybe because they get some high noon sun for about an hr. One of the Sun Power I have in deep shade throws a new sport every year! I divided it and moved part to the Midnight Rose bed and the divided half is throwing a sport and not a bad looking one either. Next spring I'm going to pry the sport out, replant and see what it does.
thanks for the info... i guess mine get scorching sun . it's eastern exp with nothing blocking the sun until noon- 1pm.
maybe i'll have to find a new spot. I do have a Heuchera Plum Pudding that needs to be moved. it's getting choked out by other hostas, and is not growing as well as the other 2.
maybe they all need to be moved to Wisc next year.
