CLOSED: Deer Tick? Yeah or Nay

Frisco, TX(Zone 7b)

Is this an Ixodes scapularis? The dear wife let out an incredible shrill shriek just a few seconds ago. We are outside Dallas, Texas

Not a deer tick, but in the same family (Ixodidae). It appears to be a male Gulf coast ear tick, Amblyomma maculatum - see http://tinyurl.com/dxtcsd for an example. The deer tick, Ixodes scapularis, is much different in appearance - see http://tinyurl.com/d5m4e5

I agree that your tick looks like the Gulf Coast Ear Tick - Amblyomma maculatum: http://bugguide.net/node/view/23881

We have a page for that species in BugFiles, but have no images so far. We would be very pleased if you would add your image to this page: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1261/

Kennedy - done, bug added :)
My wife (who has just recovered from finding this bug) actually DID find it near her ear.
Is there any correlation between this event and the colloquial name ???
