Well, its been a long time since I last visited a church but I remember most of them that I sang at school and in church, my most favourite hymn (I love to sing even though it sets the animals running) was written in the 1600's by John Bunyan, called He Who Would Valient Be.

He who would valiant be
'gainst all disaster,
let him in constancy
follow the Master.
There's no discouragement
shall make him once relent
his first avowed intent
to be a pilgrim.

Who so beset him round
with dismal stories
do but themselves confound
his strength the more is.
No foes shall stay his might;
though he with giants fight,
he will make good his right
to be a pilgrim.

Since, Lord, thou dost defend
us with thy Spirit,
We know we at the end,
shall life inherit.
Then fancies flee away!
I'll fear not what men say,
I'll labor night and day
to be a pilgrim.

I yell this one out whenever it appeals to me to do so, the other is Jerusalem by William Blake. Alas in these days of a more modern approach to Christianity in Britain these older hymns seem to be lost in most churches.

I am a Southern Baptist, and a list of favorite hymns could go on forever....

I have a simple hymn that plays as the hourly chime on my computer... it always reminds me that God IS eternal, IS everywhere, and IS not to be forgotten for a moment.

It was written in the late 1600's I believe. The words say,

'Tis by Thy Grace the mountains stand,
God of Eternal Pow'r
The seas grow calm at Thy command,
and Tempests cease to roar."
