All the chicks are claimed, however I do know lots of people at ASBC who will have more babies. Dmail me if any of you are. still interested. Anyone reading who has any chicks can be welcome to post here. Keep in mind the location of our round-up will be at "Loves Lookout on 69 just outside of Jacksonville, Texas (south of Tyler) on May 16th.

the discussion should probably continue here in Poultry and Livestock Forum.
To answer some of the questions asked in the above thread:
*Most pet quality of any chicken I know of, very docile.
*Very hardy in winter, feathered (bearded) chins, and feet
*Their feathers are more like fur than feathers
*They provide special fertilizer
*Not large eggs, but very good, organic and fresh.
*Important egg information as "good to know"*
Eggs from the store can be over 30 days old, and will actually keep for up to 100 days.
The 3 digit number on the carton in front of the "sell by" date is the 001-365th day of the year they were laid. Sell by date is usually about 45 days after that day. Always check your eggs before cooking. If they float, throw them away. Sinkers are good, just cook right away because the water washes the protective antibacterial "bloom" coating off the egg.
On a small scale they are great to have, even in the suburbs if there are only a couple of hens. Some of us can't have roos, :-/...
Here are my 2 grown pullets, Goldie and Tango
Bearded Silkie Bantam Discussion (TXGardening ETRU)
Wow, wish I was coming to your roundup!!
Aw Moxon, I wish you were too. :-)
Good to know about the 3 digit #!
They are very different and interesting....
Nice looking chickens. I wish I was closer. I would love to go. :( *pouting*
Just saw this thread-just had to tell you what lovely ladies!
Thank you sandie, and sewincircle! They are special! ;-)
The chicks I have are really growing, and getting used to their world. Yesterday I let them wander around, *supervised, (of course)*... 3 of them were in the nestbox with Tango and Goldi. One of the chicks had nudged under Goldi's wing. That cute little head peeping out was too much!! Goldie, looks like she is as maternal as Tango.
Such a good breed!
Well, even though I am not coming to the Texas RU, I did get a new silkie today. His name is Weeble. He came to me because he was going to be culled by a show breeder for having wonky feet. A friend of mine took him on as a young bird, since he seemed to get around just fine despite his feet. Then, he became a rooster and she is in the city and can't keep him, so he came to me. He is a black silkie with the attitude of a rooster 10 times his size, and he runs like a cheetah on those wonky feet, so he'll have a good home here!
Big chuckles, ROFLMBO!!
"Wonky" feet!!! Gotta love that ;-S
Weeble sounds like a wonderful bird. They do have some colorful 'tudes'.
Gnarly toes! WOW.. I am glad he has a place to live out his days now. My Silkies are getting so big.
Question, How do you know if a Silkie is bearded? Mine are feathery everywhere. I have a bowtie on my Showgirls though. :)
i have a couple of silkies with thoes toes and they are just fine to si dont know might be a silky thing
if it is a bearded silky it will have another sort of bump thing of feathers under its chin similar to the one on its head but not as big if it isnt its neck will be flat with no excess feathers.
Ohhhh, I see. I dont think I have them then. They look flat in the neck area. Thanks.
