After an unexpectedly harsh freeze we had a couple years back I stacked a bunch of pots containing dead brugs in the side yard. Figured I'd empty the pots as I needed them. Imagine my surprise when this one came back after 3 months of being 'dead'. From the pot I knew it was one that I'd raised from seeds several years back, but the tag had faded being stacked in the sun. I had put all the seedlings that year in the same type pot that I got on sale. It's a small bloom. The tendrils aren't anything to write home about. One of a million okay, but not special flowers. 10 years ago we might have killed for it, but there are so many nicer ones now. It stayed on the patio since it bounced back, and it's been pretty low maintenance, It'll probably go bye-bye when they enact our new water conservation program. so I'm enjoying these last blooms before that happens.
One of those "assumed dead" stories A small NOID
Awfully pretty noid, Mary!
Mary, I love the shape of the bloom. I like the way the second skirt drops just a bit I'm not too crazy about stuffed second skirts. I'd say that the small blooms and low maintenance might buy it some more time. What's the size of the plant so far? How's the fragrance?
The bush itself is 3 1/2 feet tall. Nice night time fragrance. Not overpowering. Myself, I like big blooms like Creamsickle more than small ones. Creamsickle is just off the patio, so it's tough for the little guy to live up to it.
Yes, it would be difficult to compete against Creamsickle. I was so glad when my Creamsickle came back from the dead toward the end of 2008. I was too heartsick when I lost her last spring and couldn't make myself dump her. She took off over winter, "Y"ed and now had a number of buds. Can't wait to see her in bloom again. However, small isn't bad if it's low maintenance. Will water conservation be mandatory? I can see having to chuck the less desirable ones to preserve the health of the great ones. Didn't you say you had found homes for some locally?
I like them. They are fat and fluffy.
That's a cutie Mary! Sort of reminds me of Hazzah which just wrapped up a major flush for me.
ok...to be initiated into brughood, will someone tell me what NOID means? i'm guessing that it means 'unidentified'. (yes, you can snicker.)
No Identification... NO ID ...
What kind of water restrictions are they putting in place? Have you tried the polymer crystals in your potted plants and in the ground when planting.. they really do reduce the amount of watering. I make the drainage holes in my pots small so the water stays in long enough for the crystals to absorb the water then I don't have to worry about watering so much. My brugs or hibiscus don't wilt in the heat of the day since I started using them.
thanks for both tips!
My best friend has a good well, so most are going there. The water problems will be restrictive, and most of all expensive! Everyone is going to be paying a lot more, even in the lower tiers. They're all still arguing about it, but they're supposed to be ready to go into effect June 1st. There will be big fines if you water on the wrong day, etc., etc. It will also vary according to where you live. For instance I live in the City of Poway, which will have different rules than 5 miles down the road in San Diego. It'll all work out, and if it seems to last more than one season we might look into gray water.
Mary, we're in the same dilemma down here in Central Florida. Right now we get to water twice a week but they will soon be dropping it down to once a week. I had to extend my irrigation pipe out another 60 feet into the lake just to be able to draw water. We are going to need some serious tropical rains this summer to help us out.
Hello All,
I go by the back pond when it is low know I am in trouble even with the recent showers of rain it is still down about 4 feet and until it gets back up I know thing's are low , even with the showers and all the pop up showers it's not coming up so I figure another year of drought here in south carolina. but have to do the best I can with what I got!!
Best of luck!
Carolyn
i wish i could have sent rain clouds your way...we just had rain for over a week! ugh. but i do appreciate again, the tip on the water crysals, LL...i'll be away for over a week in aug. usually by then we are baked dry.
Ohhhhhhhhhh Mary, wish you good luck with the babies...maybe lots of rain will come soon and no restriction.....
I live waaaaay up north from California, but started keeping all water from washing dishes, etc.a few years ago and use it to water my yard outside. Last year I started saving all shower water as well. It's amazing how much water is collected from simple things like that. Thought I might as well get on with it, as this is the way of the future On the plus side, I don't have to use the garden hose very often anymore, and my arms are much stronger!!
Hope you get rain also.
Bridget
