Best source for lilies?

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, I am a daylily person, but I have been slowly adding a few lilies in the garden. I love them! Where is the best place to buy nice sized bulbs for a reasonable price?

If you do trades for them, would it be best in the Fall?

Thanks,
Teresa

I like The Lily Garden and B & D Lilies, both on line.

Bluegrass, Welcome to the addiction! :)

Fall is the time for trades with bulbs.

ok, one question how do you avoid digging thru the bulbs? I hate slicing them!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Dig slowly, cautiously and wide following the stem. It is a process that one must not hurry!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

nanny, do you use a digging fork or a spade?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Don't laugh...I just use my little trowel. I am on my hands and knees and really do take my time and pay attention to what I am doing. I did see a very little short shovel at walmart though that might be good.

I use a digging fork, too. I seem to have better luck with that.

I have been planting lily bulbs all over the place amoung my daylilies and roses. I think the lilies look great interplanted with the daylilies. Join us in the lily crazies, you can't go wrong.

Hi Bluegrass,
If you are just starting out a good place to get bulbs at a very reasonable price is easytogrowbulbs.com . You can get the link at Garden Watchdog. Have fun catching the lily flu. Marty

Marty,

I have never used "Easy to Grow" for lilies but have used them for many other things and the plants they shipped were always impressive. They have the best/biggest callas and tuberoses I have seen ever, bar none. Your lily experience was good with them?

I clicked the link and discovered that I remember buying from Easy to Grow bulbs last year. Not lilies. At any rate I checked out their lily selection and was less than impressed with the very small amount of choices available. I want more to choose from. What they have listed I already have or don't want.

My experience with them has been excellent, Steve. Their bulbs are close to the size of B&B. I also get lots of other bulbs from them. FYI for those who also play with Iris. All of their Iris are rebloomers. Rita, I agree with you that they did not have a good selection this year. When I talked to them about this, I was told that their supplier did not have the selection this year. Probably it was the weather in the NW, which has been mentioned on other threads in this forum. Also, I was suggesting them for someone who is just starting to grow lilies, not for someone like you, Rita, who has how many thousands? LOL

Actually I just bought afew packets of the more common lilies at the local garden center each year, planted them amoung my roses and never worried about the tags. Last year I got the lily crazies and was the first time I mail ordered. But that was just from VB Wholesale were I bought mostly collections. This was my first year buying fancier lilies. Never had trumpets or orienpets or any of the hybrids before, all bought this spring.

I never counted them but I don't think I have a thousand :-((

But I do agree that they have great quality at easy to grow bulbs. I liked what I got last year.
