New Beginnings

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

As spring comes in to full swing, it is always a treat to see what has been going on outside while I was camped out next to the pellet stove all winter. Amazing what each spring brings us. Thought I'd share a little bit of mine.

One asiatic dot something or another that needs transplanting. I remember a couple of years ago planting a bulb or two. NYrita, this is what happens to many asiatics ;)

One of my favorites to take off and reach the sky is 'Geisha Girl'. It seems like she gets going very early.

Then there are the seedlings that I hope will be the year they produce their first flowers. This will be an OT when it blooms and my good lily friend pard gave me the seeds and helped me learn a lot along the way.

Same seedlings, another view. Maybe this one is better..

And you might know that magnolia season has just been cast upon me. Hopefully it is fair to sneak a peek at my magnolia 'Ann'

Her flowers are lightly, but sweetly fragrant and she always flowers in August too, but then she has leaves, so it's not quite as showy. How can you not love 'Ann'?

And of course, the peonies are about to come upon us. 'Mollis' is always my first to bloom and is getting close.

And who doesn't love a daffodil purchased from Buggy Crazy? Everything I have, I have gotten from her.

They are quite exquisite and really brighten up the early spring landscape, but best of all NOBODY eats them, no deer, no bunnies....virtually worry free.

Ooops meant to add this:

Magnolialover- Nice daffodil.

I have had asiatics for years that never looked like that clump you have the picture of. Thats why I was so surprised by all the little guys that strouted this spring. Just couldn't figgure out were they came from :-))

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh Mags, your gardens are always so lovely! :) They make me smile. :)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks for sharing them with me.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Oh, Spring. I love these pictures. And I for one can not not love Ann. Thanks for posting them. And for crawling in the dirt, as you must have done, to get those shots of your adorable seedlings.

Now this city girl is off to google "pellet stove."

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Good lookin' seedlings there, mags. Can't wait to see blooms! Is that Dot Com at the top? Sure looks like it!

Ah, buggy daffodils, aren't they great! I have some from a mix blooming now. Oh so lovely!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ain't it fun? Spring has been so slow coming this year. About half of my Magnolia blooms were nipped by frost but still got a decent show. Dwarf irises are blooming like mad and my first tall bearded bloomed yesterday.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I don't think it is 'Dot Com' but it is some sort of speckled something or another. It has never been labeled, but I still enjoy them.

My gardens are full of weeds, which I have been working on a few hours this week. It's so nice to see things popping up and I really never remember how lovely it all is. The sweet smells after a warm spring rain.

Thanks for coming by, I just got out with the camera, after just recharging the batteries (I kept forgetting to do that). Looking forward to seeing all of your gardens too.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Those seedlings look very promising! Way to go! Glad to see spring is finally there :-)

This year I'm excited to see my first martagons. I planted 4 last fall and 3 are up and have buds. I love the foliage

Martagons foliage reminds me of little umbrellas cascading down the stalk. Can't wait to see what you have to show us soon Moby.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Our lily society got some bulbs, they're named but all mixed up so it will be a surprise for both of us. I like surprises so I bought 2. :)

Tracey,

I almost missed this thread!! Wonderful job with your lily seedlings, and your Magnolia tree "Ann" is gorgeous. Looks wonderful against your green grass. Congrats on all the lively garden activity and keep posting pictures!! ^_^

Each and every picture is beautiful! That Peony just looks ready to burst into bloom any minute, and I love 'Ann' - very pretty!!

Martagons are always a very special treat! No matter what they are they will be perfect for your gardens Moby.

Steve & Jamie thanks for stopping in. It had been a while since I had actually gotten around to taking pictures. You might know that in a ddition to lilies, magnolias are some of my favorite things in the world of plants ;)

Have been madly weeding and you know, sometimes one wonders if it makes any difference at all.

"Have been madly weeding and you know, sometimes one wonders if it makes any difference at all."

Only for a few days. My problem is grass that takes over my hand dug border. I have to redo those about 3-4x a year. If I am ambitious ^_^.

Ah yes, weeding.. *sigh* Grass is difficult to keep out of the beds and is creeping charlie...

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Maybe I have too many beds.......nahhhh. I'll just keep trying. Grass is another stickler isn't it?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Creeping Charlie is quite pretty when it's in bloom. I could have it for a whole lawn ~ if I never wanted to grow anything else. Too bad it has to die... so far I've hit it with 2 products this week. >:)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

dicamba I think is the only thing that is supposed to kill it. And I remember them saying you have to be really careful how close you apply that stuff to trees.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Yep, that was in the stuff I used. Death to Charlie!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Bye, bye Charlie.

I happened on to this thread and had to post a pic & say how amazed I am by your new beginnings and my new ones....These are from lilies that I got off a co-op that 4Paws did 12/2008 with glads/lilies from Bleek...This is my first experience with lilies and I just can't imagine how in one year they could spread like this....I actually planted them in wine barrels when I recieved them because the beds weren't ready yet so they were transplanted in October into the ground....they are just coming up everywhere including the barrels I thought I had gotten them all out of!!!! what a delight.....I loved all your beautiful spring pictures....Deb

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Wow, you got a nice mess of lilies there! Yes, please come back and post pictures when they bloom. :)

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

I promise!!!! That was just the very best co-op....this pic is another place they are just bursting out!!! can't wait to see what I have....I know lots of them were Casa Blanca, it's just my all time favorite......Deb

Thanks for coming by Depsi. Isn't it great to have a "too many lilies" problem. Please do come back here during bloom time. It looks as if you'll have quite a show. Aren't lilies great?
