CLOSED: Found under our grass in the dirt!

Corrales, NM(Zone 7a)

These guys are huge the back end is striped. They are probably 2 inches long and 1 inch high. Not too happy to be in a jar. I just wasn't even sure where to begin looking!

If they are beneficial we can just put them back. If they are dangerous though we will want to be careful because I have 5 young boys.

Thanks!

These are Jerusalem crickets (Orthoptera: Stenopelmatidae) . Other than being able to give a very painful nip with their powerful jaws, they are harmless to humans. See http://tinyurl.com/djk72e for more information. BTW, Dave's Garden lacks images of these insects in the bug files,

Oh wonderful.... I guess... what I mean is, thanks for the info. LOL.

In that case since I have them confined I will try to get a better photo and see if I can submit it.

Do they make a cricket sound too? they're big enough to make a BIG cricket sound if they do...
