Ridgefield, NJ

we found this in our garden over the weekend when we were turning the soil. it is about 4-5 inches long - shell appears to be hard - had a tail on it that is curved to the body of the bug. it wiggles its front end to move. reddish brown in color
does anybody know what this bug is?

This a pupa of a large sphinx moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae), such as a tomato hornworm - see http://tinyurl.com/c5rwp6 for an example. The mature caterpillars dig down into soft soil prior to pupation.
