A good fast growing shade is needed for my shade garden.
any advice on the Tulip Poplar tree or some other tree??
im in zone 7b - get quite hot around here
- and we DO have that clay stuff as soil.
Any info on Tulip Poplar Tree??
Tulip Tree Liriodendron tulipifera (NOT a poplar! - that's Populus). It'll do fine in clay soil as long as it isn't heavily compacted (e.g. by construction machinery at any time in the past). No problems with heat, it is native as far south as central Florida.

The variegated one is much nicer...if you can find it. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/83704/
There are several old Tulip Trees in the next block from my house. Each year they rain sap from aphids sucking on the leaves. I watch people walking the sidewalk and end up having fallen sappy leaves stuck to their high heals.
I have the variegated version and am a little disappointed with it.
It looked great in the catalog.
But in real life, the variegation is pretty subtle.
And the tree gets so tall that the variegation can hardly be noticed.
But I guess mine may just be a dud and others may be nicer.
Just my experience.
I have two. Have had one die twice. Maybe aphids? I LOVE the shape and that leaves are pretty yellow in fall. Leaves also fall from tree all within 48 hours so it makes for one easy cleanup. I like it enough that I'll keep trying LOL
