Can anyone recommend a nice companion plant for Perovskia. I need something to put in front of three of them on a small berm, but I want something that won't obscure completely the bottom of the plant. I'm so bad at companion planting.
Maybe we should start a forum for people like me.
Anyway, I need somethign to go in front of it and something around the base of the berm to finish it off.
I'd like to stick to cool colors. Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks.
Companion planting
I'm not sure why you want to see the bottom of the sage. If you don't mind covering up a little of the bottom of the sage though there are lots of choices. Smaller Gaura is lovely with perovskia. Another possibility is Sea Lavender (Limonium perezii), carpet roses, daylilies. Edge with mondo grass or with Japanese hakone grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' and yes it will grow in full sun). You could use something flatter like creeping Jenny or ajuga.
Any of those sound good to you?
Actually limonium sounds like an excellent idea, as I want to keep it subtle. Thanks much!
You're welcome! Good luck with it. Limonium does tend to be frost tender though. A good chill can kill them. Sorry, I should have mentioned that earlier. It's one I really love though. My garden will never be there without it.
I don't know how much colder Lodi's winters get than Dublin, but I have one in my yard and it gets some damage from frost, but I was just looking at it this past weekend and it's coming back strong, to look at it now you'd never know it had been damaged.
Lamb's ears is a nice low growing plant with great grey leaves and the flowers bloom early in the season before the sage.
I've had them before, years ago, and they survived the winters until I pulled them out. I miss them actually and now I'll be putting them back. I have some lamb's ear that I can divide and use as a border. Thanks everyone.
Love to see a photo of it when it's done. Enjoy!
