This should be easier to guess. What were their real purpose? It's made from ivory and must be about 80+ years old at least and were possessions of my great grandfather.
Guessing Game - Part 2
I would say it was used for cutting eyebrows, you'd run the comb through the eyebrows, cut and with brush sweep off the hair remnants...
It's a mustache comb and the brush is to brush any loose hairs away.
Anybody guess why this thread stopped moving?
No idea unless one of us got it right maybe?????lol
I saw similar toothbrushes!
looks like the brush that used to come in a shoe shine kit. I KNow!!! It's part of a man's shaving kit! The comb is for the mustache, the brush is to shine his shoes.
Now then, Dinu,,,,,tell us what it REALLY is? lol
A comb for lice?
Ivory. Mustache comb. Brush is not for teeth. mcrochet has correctly said in the post on April 25. I guess these tools were for the elite which my great grandfather once was. There was a shoe-horn that had a polishing tool too - I've misplaced it. If I get it I'll share how it is. It is a foldable one.
Here is the inscription of the manufacturer of the brush.
Very nice. You have many family history items that I have seen in your posts. These are really nice to pass down to future generations.
I believe you must cherish each item, as you should.
Thanks for sharing.
Yes indeed, cpartschick. I'd love to keep some as long as I can. There will be a time when a few things have to be given away and we must detach ourselves from the sentiments slowly. I guess that is the right way to happiness. But I must see them ending up in good hands.
Yes, when items have been saved that have memories attached, they should be given down to someone that can appreciate that.
I have several items from my grandmother and great-grandmother that are not valuable as such, but have huge value to me as they contain so much history and are from the mid to late1800's. These items show how different life was then as compared to now.
Sometimes I wonder why a particular item was saved. What made that item special in the mind of the person who saved it for all these years.
Wow, that old? Do you wish to share some of those for us to have a look? Yes, sentimental value comes utmost.
They are not exciting items. Like a swatch of fabric from my G.grandfathers wedding pants, my grandmothers first hand sewn button hole, a hanky, things like that.
My mom still has the old irons my great grandmother used to make extra money ironing clothes for people. She had a few that set on the woodstove. They are kind of neat.
My grandmother did save old valentines though, from the 1911-15 when she was a teacher. Those are really special. I have them in a fireproof vault. I should take some pictures. Not only are they pretty, but they have such a history.
I'll wait to see that interesting part of your prized possessions. That's very nice! I've my mother's samples with the needle that she did before her marriage. I think I should begin a new thread to show them all off.
Great idea. Your family is very talented.

Just now posted that blog. Hope you will find it interesting.
I have dial-up, so I miss most of the pictures, but I did see a few.
I did enjoy reading your blog. Interesting items and so much family history. Clever how you started with walking on the rug, and then the photo later showing the rug.
I have a photo of my grandmother's sister in front of a table holding my grandmother's doll. I believe it is from 1902 or around there. I have both the table and the doll now. I should find the photo and display it with the doll and table.
Thanks for the idea! and for the link to your interesting history.
Oh is it? Thanks for letting me know you liked it. As early as 1902 which you mention, there were hardly any cameras here and so many of the events are not recorded. And it was expensive to get a picture taken. There was an old studio that specialized in group pictures and that gave way to a modern building about a decade back. It served for more than 60 years if I remember right. One of the famous photo journalists by name TS Satyan is from Mysore and he lives not far from us. He is 80+. He had a camera in his childhood!
Yes, try for those items and it will make interesting reading. There are many people that love nostalgia.
My grandmother got her first camera in 1912, I think the one I have may be that one. She did her own developing etc. So we have quite a few pictures that year and after that. She had some pictures from before and some tin types too. I am happy to have these memories saved.
The photos are all scanned and on this computer. I just have dig them up.
How nice! Try to share with us.
In search of the image of these antiques for my blog that I'm now making, I dug it back. That blog is about some more antiques.
There are several newcomers now since it was started.
