So how does that work? You order in August or after when the new stock goes up but when does it ship? Wouldn't lilies planted in early fall send out folliage and kill themselves before winter? I always plant my lilies in the spring so am very confused about fall planting. Although I do know that they can be planted in the fall.
Also, I was wondering if you order the "normal" size bulbs or if you order the "extra large" I see listed on some of the bulbs. Just wondered if the raving about the big bulbs was because of ordering the extra large size.
Do the bigger bulbs have two noses? I saw some like that with my Lily Garden order, those will put up two stalks instead of one.
Honestly, I don't know anything about ordering premium bulbs. Thats what comes from someone who's past history is store bought prepackaged bulbs and VB Wholesale bulbs.
Thanks. You need lots of patience for all my neverending questions.
Fall Lilies from Buggy Crazy
Buggy shipped my order in October. The regular size bulbs she sent were huge. I can't imaging the super size!
The more experienced members here can probably give you a better explaination, but I'll try. If I'm remembering corectly, the lilies have gone dormant before they're dug and won't wake up until the temps are right. They actually do better if planted in the fall because they have more time to get a good root system going before having to send up a shoot. OK guys, did I get it right?
Yehudith
Yep, you got it right Yehudith. :)
Rita, I ordered in August and in early October I received my lilies. It's like Christmas in October. :)
You did good! They lilies need a cool spell before they'll bloom again.
I got a regular (medium?) sized bulb of Skyscraper from buggy and it had 4 noses on it!
It's too late for fall planting here when the vendors are able to ship. But I wanted her bulbs bad enough that I ordered in the fall, received them in October and put the Priority mail box thay came in in my bulb fridge for the winter....I had to open it and peak out of curiousity, but then I just closed it up and kept it at 40 degrees, along with my other lily bulbs, dahlia tubers, etc. from October till just about a month ago when everything starts coming out of dormancy. (wish they'd all sleep another month, but they don't).
They'd prefer fall planting though if that is an option for you.
Chocolatemoose- You must have an extra refridgerator to store all your lily bulbs that you need to dig in the fall.
pardalinum- I didn't realise that a bulb could have more than two. I guess with all the talk about how large the bulbs from Buggy Crazy are, I should not be surprised.
And I should have realized they need a cold spell before they will grow again. I just never figgured it out. Good thing there are lots of people here who are willing to help explain :-))
Nice Fridge!!!
LOL Chocolatemoose, I have done that before :-)
Steve...and for opposite extreme reasons, I'm sure...Texas/Alaska...We do what we gotta do to plant what we wanna plant...LOL
BTW...I'm originally from CT. My goal when my kids were grown was to move to the Dallas/FW area. I'd been down there a couple times and liked it. Somehow, after a divorce, I was fortunate enough to fall in love again (got it right this time) and got mis-directed way far north of that area...LOL
Oh Chocolatemoose, a woman after my own heart! :) I love a true lily addict!
Chocolatemoose, That bulb fridge is just awesome! You are one lucky duck!
I gave my large one to my other half's sister, ^_^ I have a small one for tulips I still use.
It might be kind of neat to live up there, Chocolatemoose - you're near Fairbanks, right? I am from IL so a little bit of a change for me as well, just not so dramatic!
That's an insane fridge! All from one vendor? How do you keep them alive during the winters?
Yes, about 15 miles from Fairbanks. It's neat and I love it, but it is challenging in many ways.
Intersessor...The fridge is in our garage which we keep at about 35-40 degrees. Warm enough to keep the furnace/water pipes from freezing.
The accumulation is from many vendors over 3 years. Previously I stored things in wood chips/baggies in rubbermaid tubs. I went abit overboard ordering for the 08 season and was trying to figure out how to store so many come fall. My initial intention was a small apartment size fridge. My DH laughed and said I had way too many bulbs/tubers to fit in one of those. He suggested a regular fridge. Since we couldn't find a used one (options are limited up here), I started researching a new one. The rest is history. I didn't expect to fill it, but did. Got it at Sears, on sale and with a rebate....Still said I must be out of my mind when they delivered it...
Because it is a frost free, my concern was dessication as I had to spritz the rubbermaid tubs once a month, but it was the opposite. The wood chips and the volume of baggies kept everything very moist and I started seeing just a bit of blue mold mid-March, along with the fact things were starting to sprout. I did toss a bunch of dahlias that were mushy, but I have so many, considering the fact only my Asiatic lilies can winter over in the ground, anything I could toss was a blessing. I did not lose a single lily though. Buggy's box is the bottom left of the bottom shelf. Bottom right is the Faraway order from October also.
SInce I had room, I experimented and stored gladiola bulbs, tuberoses, calla lilies, crocosmias (all on the door) and all seemed happy with the 40 degrees I kept the fridge at. They are all sprouted in the garage under lights....The lilies get leggier than I'd like starting in the garage, but I love them enough to deal with that, they still bloom very well once they are outdoors and if they'd sleep longer in the fridge, they wouldn't have so much time to get leggy before they can get hardened off outside mid to late Ma.
I did mention Buggy so I am OT....LOL

You mentioned lilies and you're always on topic! :)

All shelves are just lilies & dahlias...Door is all the other miscellaneous stuff
