Weird Weather of '09 #10

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I think she called it a Painted Bunting.....will have to go back and look....but it really is beautiful.......and I love the bird bath.....another DG friend made it for her using an Elephant Ear Leaf! Don't have Elephant ears, but am going to try one with one of my Rhubarb Leaves this summer.....

North Lakewood, WA(Zone 8b)

That Painted Bunting bird is amazing. I wish we had birds like that here.
Re: Slugs
Chickens are best for rooting them and their little white eggs out.
Sluggo works but some hide and survive.
We'd all carry squirt guns filled with ammonia around in the evening and have target practice with the slugs and snails. The grandkids love doing it. With a lot of persistence they will decrease in number. I rarely find snails or slugs anymore and they were a major problem here for along time.

After 3 days of 90's, we are now at 54 going to 59 today with a steady drizzle. It is refreshing. I don't do heat ( humidity) very well.

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I just recorded my weather - 34 d ssw wind 7 mph cloudy and pressure 30.09 It actually looks like it might snow

mortswife it IS snowing here. UGH!!! I'M SO TIRED OF THIS!!! I took this pic yesterday, those white spots are half dollar size snow flakes. The flakes this morning aren't that big, but are just as wet since it's not freezing and sticking.

Judi, I'm sorry the diatomaceous earth didn't work for you and your neighbor. I'm wondering if maybe it's too humid there so it makes it moist and removes the effect.

Spring is back today and plans on staying for at least 4 days. I have been in the house laying flooring while it was cold but back to the garden and get the veg garden rototilled. Oh and finish putting the room back together. Tomorrow go sailing!
Portland thank you for the compliment on my DW. She has a smile on her heart also. We are hard at work for the next 4 days getting the garden going for the summer. Lots of Dahlias to plant and weeds to pull before they take deep roots. Lots to look forward to.
Love all of the birds, we quit putting out feeders so my cat stops the murder. Wasps are coming out so the aphids when they hatch will perish. Awfull late start this year with green. Our leaves haven't emerged yet.

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

OK in the last hour we've had snow , rain, and sunshine. AND our flag is flying straight out.

Eugene, OR

Sounds like our day, no snow, but we did have a downpour that turned to sleet. Then the sun came out. It was another one of those 5 min. days.

Beautiful pics everyone!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

that's for certain!! However, I'm exceptionally thankful for the 'no snow' part!

Eugene, OR

me too!!!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

We are getting lots of precipitation some snow some rain. Glad to have it. We had over 8" of powder snow day before yesterday. Now rain. Trees are staying asleep and no birds yet at all. They got 4' of snow on the other side of the Rockies yesterday! Major blizzard closed Marias Pass.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Steve, was thinking of you when I saw the weather reports last night......guess I won't complain too much about our "cold" weather......don't know about you but I am so ready for summer to get here.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I'm doing the good weather dance for you guys. Seems like I lost my groove!^_^

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Actually I love cool springs and lots of precipitation. Today I set up my compost pile to add the layers when I start mowing. One bin filled with new carbon material awaiting nitrogen from grass. My big problem is it is too cold to go out and test sail my canoe. I probably will end up in the lake and need it warmer to get warmed when I get out.

Eugene, OR

No frigid bathing Sofer. Brrrrrrrrrrr.

(Judi)Portland, OR

So windy and cloudy here today, but it is supposed to get up to 70. Yesterday (sorry all of you with snow) was glorious! We are expecting rain on Sunday.

Eugene, OR

Had a nice day today. Starting to rain now, looks like it will be here for the weekend. Not windy, so it's not too cold. I won't need to water tomorrow.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Sally I have a feeling we won't need to water for the next 5 or 6 days. :-(

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Same here LOL About 57 currently and sprinkly.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Looks like we are all in the same boat......Laura and I finally got our beds all weeded out and just want to go out an play....so of course it is supposed to be gray and raining all week:(
Oh well, guess it is a good time to get out the planning book and decide what all is going in this year......if you plant enough flowers and herbs there isn't any room for the weeds to grow...right?!?!? I do have good dreams and fantasies!!!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

64 here, Humid and it just started pouring again. Ahhhh!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

It was humid and warm, but overcast this morning. I spent several hours out weeding and getting a grass edge back. When it started to rain, I left to go to the nursery. While I was there, it got very hot and humid. And when I got home and ready to start in the yard again, a big wind came up and it started to pour. I got soaked and that was it. I should be out now, but once I come in after getting soaked, it gets hard to head out to a wet yard.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I am off to my new garden woodland in the cool drizzle. I have over a hundred everbearing strawberries that I am going to put in the lightly shaded woodland until I get ambitious and finish it off with the hardscape. I need to collect more stones and that will take another year. Too much snow in the mountains to collect now.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

57 and drizzly today. MORE rain tomorrow

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Bright and sunny here.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

What a beautiful day for what was supposedly going to be the "worst" day of the weekend. It's 60 degrees, and has been dry all day....now I wish I wouldn't have killed myself getting my upper grass mowed yesterday when it was so wet!
This is what spring is supposed to be like!

Eugene, OR

That's about to change I'm afraid. The forecast for us tomorrow is "high winds and torrential rain" That doesn't sound like fun at all!!! It was nice most of the day, but rained off and on. Guess I'll need to protect some things early tomorrow.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Rj.... I like your weather. It was a mix today. Rain 5 min. sun 3 min., rain 10 min., sun 4 min. But.... I don't mind it when It's 60 outside when it rains! But, tomorrow does not sound good at all.

Eugene, OR

Batten down the hatches!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That's for certain.... Seems like it's always on my days off too, when I have plans of working in the yard :-(

Eugene, OR

I know.....took mom to lunch at her favorite casino yesterday to celebrate her bday (95). So I didn't get anything done and had other things to do today (it was supposed to rain all day) and before, they were saying it would clear up on Monday.......well that certainly changed. It's a conspiracy. LOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree! Now..... who should would tell about this?? lol

Wow, congrats to your mom on her 95th!! That's great. And kinda funny that she has a favorite casino at 95!

Eugene, OR

She wouldn't go before Dad passed. Didn't want to leave him and he didn't like it. She likes to play the penny slots, has a ball playing and likes to people watch.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree with her completely!

Eugene, OR

It gives her a chance to see and talk to someone besides me! It was a beautiful ride, we got to look at critters all the way to Florence. If the weather had been better, we would have gone down by the ocean for a bit. We tend to celebrate bdays all month. Free lunches at two casinos, and pie at Marie Calendars. LOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

sounds great!
