These insects are just emerging from the dime sized, hexagon-shaped, egg structure in the middle. Does anyone know what they are? They look like some type of spider. I live in East TN and they are on the side of a tree.
CLOSED: Help identify these spiders(?)
These are newly hatched nymphs of an assassin bug (Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Reduviidae) known as a wheel bug (Arilus cristatus) - see http://tinyurl.com/cps633 for an image. They are general predators on other small insects/arthropods, and thus ofrten considered beneficial. However, the adult insects are capable of inflicting a very painful 'bite' if mishandled. See also http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/560/ for more images and information.
