Quick question regarding direct sowing in gardens...

Dallastown, PA(Zone 6a)

So today is a beautiful day and I plan to direct sow some of my seeds... My question is: Is it ok to direct sow the seeds then throw mulch on top?

Saugerties, NY(Zone 5a)

No, its not a good idea. The mulch is to heavy for the seedlings to come up through. You also stand a chance of a last frost, you never know with Mother Nature. I may be all wrong so, lets see what others have to say.

One of the main purposes of mulch is to prevent weed seeds underneath it from germinating--unfortunately it'll have the same effect on plants you want to germinate. So I would skip the mulch. As far as timing, I'd check the seed packets and see if they say anything about how long before your last frost date you can direct sow them. I'd guess you're probably still at least 4 wks away from your last frost date so you probably are taking a chance by sowing things now. If you really can't wait, maybe plant half the seeds now and save half in case you get a late cold snap that zaps your seedlings.
