Who wants to grow streps from Seed?

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

I have a dozen streptocarpus seeds pods that I'd like to give away as is. By "as is" I mean I don't have the patience to sort them all out and package them up in little tissues. ^_^

Each seed pod has been cut off and dropped into a regular white envelope which I then folded in half and put into a ziplock snack bag. Some of the seeds have leaked out into the plastic bag and some are in the envelopes. There are hundreds of seeds in each pod so I'm sure you can gather enough to get them sprinkled on some potting mix.

I'd like to send one pod per person if there is enough interest. Here are the names of the streps,

2 of Lynn's Ruby Red
1 Midnight Flame
1 Wild Irish Rose
1 Christmas Morning
2 Shenandoah Shooting Star
1 Shenandoah Moonlight
2 Bristol's Petticoats
1 Bristol's Tropical Twister
1 Bristol's Pajama Party (I don't know if the fantasies will come true from seed but the parent is a pretty pink)

First come first serve on choices, make your choice here on the thread so others know what's left to choose from and then d-mail me your name and address and I'll get them mailed out.

Brenda,
I would take any type to try to grow.. This is something I never did... Hope I am in time for this... Do you want postage?
Hugs,
susan

Hi Susan! Your the first, so in plenty of time. I'm mailing these for a single stamp and envelope so postage is on me.

Here is a picture of little streps coming up in the plastic take out container I planted them in about 2 months ago. I put some holes in the bottom of it and put a piece of foil cupped under it and then close the lid and let them be.

Mercy, forgot the picture again!

I planted these strep cyanandrus seeds in a deli container. Once again a few holes in the bottom with an ice pick, then a layer of perlite, then some damp potting soil. Sprinkle the seeds on top and put the lid on. I use an extra lid under the container. In two months I have bottom watered one time.

Brenda,
I will need help in how to grow these as I only did once and they died before they could get to the size of yours... Thank you so much.... doing the happy dance. I don't care what you send me but could you send me pajama party seeds if you have enough? If not that is fine... ^_^
Hugs,
Susan

Oh Please, please, please. I have been wanting these since I saw yall talking about them last year. Please let me be in time!

(Zone 1)

Oh how I wish I could grow Strep's! I just love Bristol's Pajama Party!

I got seeds for a strep (can't remember which one) from SnowRose about a year and a half ago, I sowed them and they sprouted and looked really good but all of a sudden they wilted and died on me. I got seeds from KimsKreations last year that never germinated. I've tried mature Streptocarpus plants but just can't seem to keep them alive either. Sometimes I wish I lived in a cooler climate so maybe I'd have better luck growing them.

A few years ago I received a little plant in trade from a former DG'er of Strep Dibley's Gwen, it grew and did real well for about eight months and then all of a sudden died. I got some Streptocarpella cuttings in a trade last year and they rooted easily. That plant is hanging out in the sun on the pool deck and blooms it's head off. How come the little Streptocarpella's seem to like the heat and humidity but the big Strep's want it cooler? No fair! ^_^

I think I just don't have the patience that most of y'all do for these beauties. I do so much better with plants that can be almost completely ignored ... like with not watering for a few weeks, or else being out on the deck where I spend a lot of time and just water everything with the garden hose. LOL.

Ok, Pajama Party seeds for Susan! The only step I left out above on how I do it is that after I sprinkle the seeds I spritz them with water before sealing the lid on. I have my seeds on top of my refrigerator under a grow light. I think the extra warmth up there helps.

1 of the Bristol's Petticoats for Tish

And one type for Planti ... might as well pick one! ^_^

You too jsxtiger....

I had a white and a purple streptocarpella for nearly a year and neither one ever put on one bloom for me! They needed your warmth and humidity Lin!

Ok I have 6 takers so far, anyone else interested??

I love saving the seed pods Gail, I just don't like having to divide up those little bitty seeds! So this is easy, send the whole thing. ^_^

Hello! Would you consider a lurker (please read "newbie that soaks info and has nothing yet to post") for your offer, or is it open just for regular posters? I would love one, if possible, though I have no idea what I'm doing...

Thanks,
Alexandra

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

I am also a newbie here. I would love to try growing from seed. Gail has sent me two beautiful streps (by the way Gail, they are doing great). Any would be exciting!
Don't feel bad Alexandra, I am a reader too. Always lurking around. LOL!!
Thanks,
Melanie

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Got my seeds already!! Oh my gosh, thank you for ALL of them! That was so kind of you. I'm sick as a dog today (we've been passing a virus all around the house) but I think I can still find the strength to sow some cups of seed ~LOL

It's the best medicine :) Thanks, Brenda

B. Hey Mei has been leading a secrete life! I found these 2 seed pods and think a 3rd is forming--What do you think...should I go for it? The plant is still young, it's very healthy. Will this hybrid bloom true from seed? It is a very deep, rich plum color that , so far, I have been unable to capture on camera.

Yay! Mine arrived too! Thank you so, so much!

Maybe tomorrow......

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

phoebesviolets - your hybrid will not produce exact copies from seed but chances are many will look similar. I say try it. Some real neat plants have been brought about by selfings. I notice a lot of the Franken's are.

Hello Brenda,

Looks Like I missed the great seed giveaway:(
If I haven't though, I too would appreciate a few seeds. Though I must say I have been lusting after Falling stars:)
I must say though that I loved your simple directions for planting strep seeds.
I have planted strep seeds, so far, after months, I'm starting to see miniscule leaves emerge.
I only have one tiny space for streps so I'm considering placing the larger ones outside.
Any advice to offer. (Talk to me like I'm a two year old) I'm a new newbie with growing streps:)
Also, can you tell me which streps are most prolific?
Cheers,
Marlene

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My seeds arrived -- 2 kinds! Thank you! I will have fun sowing these once spring seedlings are off the heat mat. Meanwhile, I think I remember that the best place to store them is in the fridge, staying cool & dry...

Wytheville, VA

I have 2 pods of Maasens White up for grabs

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Greetings Kivit,
I have a seed pod of Lavender Profusion, would you like to trade?

Thanks,
Marlene
