Lily Bulb Question

Athens, PA

Hello -

I tend to lurk here. I especially like to see everyone's pictures of their lilies. Anyway, I have a question and I thought I would ask the experts.....

I received a number of lily bulbs in a trade - about 4-6 weeks ago. I planted them all in pots when I received the bulbs. I have 6 pots in my cellar (under lights) of which 5 of these pots have sprouted very nicely. I dug carefully into the unsprouted pot and found some of the scales were rotting and there was some blue mold on these bulbs. I removed the rotting scales and the mold from the bulbs and put the bulbs back into the pot.

I am wondering if the pot of bulbs that were rotting will put up shoots. I am hopeful that even though I may not get any shoots this year from these bulbs, perhaps next year I will see some shoots. Oh one more thing- these are oriental lilies - Rio Negro bulbs and I do plan on planting them outside soon as our nighttime lows seem to be finally coming out of the frigid temps.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It's certainly not out of the question that these could bloom for you. Are all your potted lilies orientals, or just the unsprouted ones? Orientals do come up later so there's still hope.

PS. Quit lurking and jump right in! :)

I am just hoping I don't lose them to rot - that is my main concern. I am thinking of perhaps taking some healthy scales and seeing if I can start them that way too, then they won't be a complete loss.

Good to know about the Orientals coming up later. The others in the pots are both Oriental and Orienpets. They all seem to be fine.

Thank you - and I may jump in from time to time...... usually I hang out in either the Water Gardens or Clematis forums.

Not a bad idea with the scaling. I'd also suggest keeping the pots on the dry side ~ don't want the soil too soggy.

Thank you so much!
