Zinnias - starting indoors

Brainerd, MN

Looking for some advice on starting Zinnia seeds indoors. I have read seen material online that claims Zinnias do not transplant well, and also that they should be germinated in darkness. None of the seed packets I have say anything about this.

I have always direct sowed them around June 1st.They bloom in August for me.They keep blooming till frost.I only grow the tall varieties.Have limited space indoors to start seed.I only start seeds indoors,if I have too.Zinnias are not on my list to start indoors.Since I direct sow them and they do fine, the darkness thing sounds like a myth?Edge

Hi.

I just started some indoors the other day in pellets. No darkness - lol! Just about all of them came up with no problems and are growing fast. I transplanted some last year from one bed to another and didn't have any problems.

I've started them indoor for three years, and transplanting has not been a problem.

Last years cherry swirl.

I start mine inside, too, for earlier blooms.

I started my indoors under lights, covered lightly. No darkness & they all germinated. Zowie, Yellow Flame.

Thanks you all... this is encouraging. I am hopeful now. Giant Doubles

I have started in doors before and had great sucess, I always try not to disturb the roots on anything started in doors when transplanting. seems to cut down on transplant shock.
