Does anyone know the Pledge of Allegance?
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of American and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands
One nation under God
Indivisible

Thank you, I made a copy of Coco's wonderful post.
And here's another pledge/oath that I strongly recommend to any one within the age range...
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

I have taken that oath before, and will do it again if the need arises.

When I was in grade school we stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before class began. We stood with our hands over our hearts and faced the flag. It is sad that this tradition was considered old fashioned and not politically correct or some such silly notion.
I agree with Mary. I, too remember starting the school day with the pledge of allegiance. I also remember when God could be mentioned in school without it being treated as if it were a criminal act.

Yes, I remember those days, and, in fact, I have only recently learned that the Pledge is not said in schools anymore.
In 1992 when my son started first grade, they still pledged allegiance to the flag first thing every morning in his CA public school. By 1996 when my daughter started attending that same school, the pledge was no longer done in any of the school's classrooms or at public events. Maybe it was due to the God reference and separation of church and state. Yet, at the same time, they still had a "Holiday" performance every December, at which the children sang Christmas and Hanukkah songs. Then a couple a years ago a new principal came along and out went the Holiday Performance as well. She said she couldn't represent all of the many religions in our diverse community, so she stopped it altogether. I'm not a religious person, but it makes me sad, all the same. Sigh…
That's too bad. In our public schools, it's still said at the beginning of each school day, led by one or more students over the PA system. I've been in my kids' classrooms and said it along with them - kind of a nice feeling :)
Yes,a sad state of affairs. I wonder if after the recent events the pledge might once again be a part of our children's school day?? One can hope.
written by Red Skelton.
"I - me, an individual, a committee of one.
PLEDGE - dedicate all of my wordly goods to give without self-pity.
ALLEGIANCE - my love and my devotion.
TO THE FLAG - our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect because our loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.
OF THE UNITED - that means that we have all come together.
STATES - individual communities that have united into 50 great states. 50 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country.
OF AMERICA.
AND TO THE REPUBLIC - a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
FOR WHICH IT STANDS.
ONE NATION - meaning, so blessed by God.
INDIVISIBLE - incapable of being divided.
WITH LIBERTY - which is freedom and the right of power to live one's own life without threats or fear or some sort of retaliation.
AND JUSTICE - The principle or quality of dealing fairly with others.
FOR ALL - which means it's as much your country as it is mine."
One last quote by Mr. Skelton."Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said,"That's a prayer" and that would be eliminated from schools, too!"
Not all our enemies are overseas. Its about time we took our schools back and taught our children the virtues of our forefathers who created this country under God.
I am very proud to say that I teach in a wonderful community that says the pledge and sings at least one patriotic song each day. We have always done this, and the songs and pledge this week have brought tears to the eyes of nearly all staff and several of the students. I teach in a community with three elementary school, each 8 miles apart. My daughter's school had a prayer service at 12:00 noon, with many parents in attendance. Students observed a minutes of silence, and then anyone who wished to speak a prayer aloud was able to. My fifth grader and third grader thought this was a fantastic way to show their support! Patriotism is alive and well in the USA!
I enjoyed that immensely. Wish they would show that clip on the news. Always loved Red Skelton.
We still say the Pledge of Allegiance in our schools. And we play John Philip Souza marches (I was destined to marry a Marine - I have loved JPS since I was a kid) ...And for those of you who have served, I personally thank you. My father served in Korea, my uncles in Viet Nam, my husband, thankfully, in peace time, and my USMC-to-be daughter - well, I guess the Powers That Be will determine that one.
Blessings, all.
Karla
I am glad to hear of these pockets of patriotism. I hope they spread like ripples going across a pond.
