Had a chance to get a quick shot of a goldfinch that was on top of the feeder's hanger ...

Good ones Iris!!

It's so nice seeing them with their bright yellow feathers now.

Norman, OK

They are beautiful little birds. Unfortunately I don't have many around when they are in their breeding colors. I had a dozen or so that hung out on my feeders all winter, but I hadn't seen one around for about 3 weeks until yesterday. I saw one in a little Redbud tree that had an empty thistle sock I planned to remove today. Guess I'll put a little more seed in it and see if I can keep this guy coming back.

My dau used to live in MI and she had a lot of them in the summer.

They're just beautiful. You captured beautiful colors for the background too. Good job!

Thanks all!
Nice picture red!
I had a about 50 goldfinches in my yard/at my feeders the other day!

Nice shots Iris and Red...I have some that have almost completely turned but haven't been able to get a decent shot yet. The numbers have declined significantly but they do nest in the area so hope to get some spring pics soon.

I just love goldfinches! I put my thistle seed at the woodline and they flock to it.

Well, guess who was back yesterday. He is not quite in full breeding plumage, but close. After watching this bird for awhile I think he is a loner that lived here all winter. Same mannerisms, perches on the same branches. I'll post a pic of him a few weeks ago for comparison.

Pic taken on 3/12/09. Quite a difference in appearance, huh?

This late in the season my poles are getting multi-use. I have to use some hooks for hanging plant baskets.

Now with 5 hummer feeders up the goldfinch are getting real confused.

chisholm, looks like yours are not quite in full breeding plumage either. I wasn't around yesterday, was off shooting wilder birds. But, I talked to my neighbor across the creek last night and she said their were 6 finches on her feeder yesterday. I guess I still have a few around. I'll keep a sock up for the summer.

Summertown, TN(Zone 7a)

They hung out in my feeders all winter until my neighbor put her thistle feeder up - now they've all moved next-door!

I guess the ones not turning gold are the females? But they have turned prettier than I realized.

I love my goldfinches, they really like it when I let my columbines go to seed! I can't seem to keep the squirrels from tearing holes in my socks.

Wilmar, AR(Zone 8a)

I love the goldfinches, too, and they have really returned with a vengance this week. I've been on vacation all week and it has been fun watching them and the other spring migrants.
Here's a pic of some of the goldies at my thistle sock

Ugh! I'm so jealous of everyone's leaves and flowers!! Just starting to get buds here. I'm a beginner birdwatcher. :) So far I have blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, juncos, woodpeckers, mourning doves, robins, goldfinches, nuthatches and some raptors, occasionally.

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

MsKatt, They sure do like the seeds from different flowers, I usually plant some large size sunflowers so the birds can pic from the seed heads.
Squirrels are cute sometimes, But, They sure can be a pain in the butt, They always dig my gardens in the spring!
The only different birds I've had here then what you have is Mockingbirds, Bluebirds, And Hummingbirds.

crazybirdlady51, They are so fun to watch! Nice photo!

I bought a tube feeder today, filled with thistle to replace that worn-out sock. Took a little siesta and there were 4 female finches. Maybe I am going to have some this summer. They sure brighten a place up.:)

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

They sure do! Hope you get lots of them!

Marlton, NJ

Nice pics Iris and CB!

Pic of the new tube feeder. The feeding spouts are reversible so you can feed seed or thistle. Has a catch tray on the bottom. Lowes' $20. I'm sure everyone is aware of the problem of sprouting seed when you hang feeders over flower beds.
