CLOSED: Can someone please identify this?

Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I have spotted these on the trunk and branches of a Japanese Maple. They are about the size and shape of a lady bug, but I am not certain if they are bugs or insect cases. When I scraped one off, there was something that could have been tiny eggs, but it also had a brown juice to come out. The shell or skin seemed thin.
