Getting shelves ready for my "teaset" violets

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

That is that flourescent string from home depot.

But, growing up, I remember my Mom always used cut strips of pantyhose. It worked really well, but harder to string through the holes :0)

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

That is what I use--it's called mason twine--works beautifully!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Jan,
Which size do you use?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I don't belong in this group as I just assume drink my tea from a styrofoam cup (horrors!) but I did want to show you how I grow my few AVs.

A few years back these "pot in pot" were all the rage and I like them a lot. You don't see them as often these days, so I take really good care of mine.

Sigh--don't remember:-( It has got pretty good heft for string

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Then I found this type of "pot in pot" at Home Depot, which are nice 'cause they're big. I have my huge Optimara AV. While the inner pot does absorb water from the larger pot, I find that I have to add a little bit of water to the inner pot--just a little bit.

and finally, years ago I found these cut class pots at Ross. I plant my AV's in a styro cup with holes and insert the cup in the glass planter. I water from the top every 2 weeks and that's it.

Nery-
those are my favorite kind. That looks like a Northhaven pot? Guess where else I saw these?...at Calloways.

They had some black, dark rust red, brown, tan, etc. I think they may have even had that shape!

Are you looking for/wanting more??

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

clever idea about the cup in glass.

So which optimara is that? I just love the ones with the curly leaves

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Vossner--Hi--nice to see you here! I remember you from VR. I have some of those pots from HD also. I learned the hard way to be very stingy with the water. I usually use themas cache pots now. I like the cut glass--pretty! BTW...tea really does taste better in a china cup!

I don't know which Optimara it is. After it blooms I will go to the website and try to match it by bloom color. Yeah, we saw them at NHG but I used to see them in a lot more places. Thanks for offering, I have about 3 empty ones now and that's enough backup, I think.

hiya phoebs!

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

yech!!! tea in styrofoam!!! My English blood just won't let me do that. One it oxidizes, I make new hot tea. :-)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

i told you I didn't belong, lol

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I don't either Nery!! I drink mine in a glass with ice.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

you do too, belong! ;0)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thank you ^_^.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Yippee! They are HERE!!

vossner: I might not belong here either ... I drink tea from styrofoam cups too, sometimes that's all that happens to be available, otherwise it's just my regular ole' coffee mugs from the kitchen cabinet!
Yikes, I bet my Irish ancestors are turning over in their graves to hear that! ^_^

Oh, and I drink my coffee black with sugar, but I MUST have sugar and cream in my tea!

Regarding those pots ... I Love the cut glass! Looks like some jars I had years ago. And, that square pot in a pot is really nice! I have bunches of those ceramic two part things from Wal-Mart, piled out on my porch needing to be scrubbed out and stored somewhere. I have no AV's anymore but lots of those pots.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I drink my coffee in a pink thermos!, lol...keeps it hot :0)...and keeps my yorkies from drinking it!!! I have one male yorkie that just LOVES coffee, and if I'm not careful he'll sneak and drink a half cup before I notice.

One night after he'd drank some, he was jacked-up! and played with imaginary butterflies until 1:00am!

Ok, so took down the pink set :0(...I was apparently the only one that liked it, lol...

And here is the blue set, back up. It really doesn't look much different than when I first posted, except it has my new plants in it, and I've added some more cups...it is service for 8, but didn't have room for all the plates...

So, ALL FINISHED!!

Now, I am seriously thinking about going back to Hobby lobby and getting two more shelves, so I can put the pink set in my office, he-hee

Mortswife-

I KNOW!...I know!

you should see all the leaves everywhere! What have I started?

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I can see it all now..................shelves all around the top of the room like a toy train, on -and-on -and -on :-)

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL...

Hey! great idea!, lol...no, hubby wouldn't allow it.

Actually the whole idea was to display them in a nice way to avoid the clutter look. Now, look at the overflow in my upstairs bathroom window!!

I recreated exactly what I was trying to fix!!!!, lol...and that isn't counting the others on the counter, that are going to be mailed off and traded. Plus the others that are in other parts of the house.

ugh...

Seedpicker: Oh my goodness ... Your display is beautiful! I think you definitely should set up more shelves with the pink tea set!

I've heard folks on DG speak of Hobby Lobby many times and I sure wish we had them here ... sounds like they carry some really good stuff! I adore those shelves!

Great job!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Plantladylin-
Thank you!

Yes, Hobby Lobby is fantastic. It is a hobby store, but then the other half of the store is kinda like Tuesday morning, but better, and better prices.

They are a Christian based company, and all the background music is Christian songs, done "musac" style. I love that about the store. They, for obvious reasons, are closed on Sundays. :0)

They have 40-50% off sales every week, ...they just rotate catagories. And every few weeks, if you check online, they'll have a 25-40% coupon that you can print for any one item. And that isn't 50% off a very high, marked up item. It is 50% off an already good price. :0)

They have fantastic garden and home decor departments as well as a lot of decorative glassware, and cast/wrought ironwork.

I checked their website for you...are you anywhere near Jacksonville? They say they have three locations there. Might be worth a little drive?
http://www.hobbylobby.com/stores/stores.cfm?page=1

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

ps-

not just three locations in Jacksonville, but there is also a location in each of these cities:
Ocala
Panama city
Pensacola
St. Augustine

are any of those within driving distance?

(Zone 1)

hmm ... St. Augustine is only about 45 minutes away! Many years ago, we used to spend every weekend in the old city ... great place but never thought to look for stores like that.

I'm making a note of the address, LOL. Thanks!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL...I don't know if you should thank me or not...

It may become a weekly drive for you!!! LOL!!!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

oh, and guess what??

This week is their 40% off coupon for anything in the store :0)
http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/weekly.cfm?page=2

I keep their ad bookmarked and check it every Sunday night for the following Monday morning shopping :0)
http://www.hobbylobby.com/weekly/weekly.cfm?menu=1&page=1

This week all their garden ironwork is on sale as well as all their decorative glassware, including huge apothecary jars.

(Zone 1)

uh oh ... I may be in trouble here! LOL, just looked up the directions to get there and printed the 40% coupon!

I adore those shelves and love ironwork for the garden ... yep, I may be in big trouble! ^_^

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Don't take a car, ...Take a van or SUV!, lol...

If you go, plan to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy it. I've don't things like that but wait too late in the day , then rush because I'm worried about traffic...

This is a really good week to go because the sales are in all the right catagories :0)

They run out of stuff so quickly, that may people shop there every week, especially Mondays

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

T, I really like the end product with the shelf project. Particularly like 3 plates/4 cups setup.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Nery!
Thanks! I called you yesterday!

They had av pots(the pot in pot style) at Joann's. They were your favorite color: red.

They also had some neat ones(including red) with a built in chalkboard for writing the name of the plant! T

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

sorry, since I lost my reg. charger, having to charge in the car. It's still there. you have dmail

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

OK- a COUPON>??!!! this is serious.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Seedpicker,
I followed your link and the AVs you received look great ^_^ !! I also like your displays (including the pink one LOL).
Lynn

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you, Lynn-

my hubby walked by and said "what happened to the pink set?". I told him I was outvoted unanimous to one :0)

...he said "but it had the TEAPOT"...

I asked him to elaborate( I silently wondered if he wasn't just saying that for my sake~knowing how much I like pink), and he said, by far, he liked the blue color and pattern better, and also that they were vintage china plates, but he thought the teapot made a better display. Then he said "now if that blue set had a teapot, you'd have just put it up, and would not have even asked anyone, right?"

I said "right", and he WAS right. That is exactly how I felt. I love that man :0)

I'll have to hurry and go back for more shelves, so I can have BOTH sets up. That will rid me of my dilemma, and at the same time it will help get rid of my little "clutter"pile.~~the whole reason I started all this!, lol...

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Actually, you need several in pastel colors, i.e. yellow, pink, lavender, blue, aqua, green, orange, blue, beige, .............:-)
