Snow's Melted, how much winter damage?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Hmmmmmmm
too bad, all thsat work for nothing.
I was talking to my gardener neighbor and she said the trails and dammage was from DeerMice.
She must be right as there is a dead one near the garden.
Cheers for the two cats that hunt here.

last year i used a spray that you attach to your hose - mole something - i got it at HD - the little bast---s had eaten one hosta and almost another and many of the roots of a ground cover. i sprayed every couple months and i has kept them away and everything in the bed recovered. gave it a good soak before winter.

Our back lawn is just riddled with tunnels. Spring, summer and fall we have a spike in the ground that emits a very loud high-pitched tone. It chases the little buggers away for about 90 feet around. (Just far enough to have them bother the neighbors)

Thomaston, CT

About the only damage I have noticed is that when the plow took out the water bar---again---the rainwater went into my per. bed, washed out soil, & left some rocks without any support. The main damage was done by my son when he dug out the old fence supports & put new ones in---he dug out & damaged quite a few plants. But it had to be done.

Hi Everyone! finally able to survey the garden... and the losses... Celeste we need a new roof also... I just hope it holds up one more year... no way that it will be done this year... I can just imagine the damage in my garden... oh I will die if any of my plants get broken!

Loss several roses and some irises I planted last year...

the area around the back of the house - near the veggie garden is totally a mess after the deck was built... the grass is totally destroyed so I will have to cover it with landscape heavy dutty plastic ... well at least the veggie garden will look a bit more organized... tons of plans for the veggie garden!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Sounds like you did rather well, considering, Kassia. I've heard that the sales from vegetable seeds is going through the roof this year. Better get yours while they are still in stock!

I'm sorry about the loss of your roses, though. I know how much you love them.

Mother nature in the sense of winter/snow did NOT damage my Holly Tree. The bunny made a burrow under it and had her babies. The tree is not completely dead, yet.
DH said he'd buy me a new one anyways. This one is at least 9-11 feet and beautiful, i've had it for 9 years.

Ok, due to this heat wave we've had, and I'm assuming everyone is having/had it...everyone of my hostas are sending up growth, the two tree peonies actually have flower buds on them! The ITOH 'Bartzellas' I bought last year for a ridiculously amount of money (they came out to about $8 each!!!) are all doing great, and I should be getting flowers on all of them!

There are some DL's that are definite goners, and this heat wave has actually "awakened" some of them. But, I know that some of these DL's were planted as 3-4 fans, and are now only sending up 1 fan...at this rate they will compost themselves by next season.

My 'Double D Cups' hosta that I purchased directly from the hybridizer (Stuart Asch) is sending up about 5-7 nubs...WOOHOO...this was my very, extremely large splurge last year! I've been anxiously awaiting for this one to pop up.

I planted 5 perenial columbines and only 1 made it.

Double D Cups with 5-7 nubs each - I'm in my glory!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I was just waiting for it!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I've been waiting all my life.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You wouldn't know what to do with it but im sure you'd have fun trying Victor. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The learning is the fun part!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Oye...I guess I should have chosen my wording a little better...lol

I can't wait to show pictures of this particular hosta. The reason I fell in love with it, and I did like the name...but..., was the cupping and variegation on this hosta is truly amazing! Stuart did warn that the true "cupping" doesn't occur until the hosta matures. So if not this year, then definitely next year! I'm just excited.

Victor, I'm just glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that response...lol.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - the cups usually are evident at maturity.^_^

Actually, I do want to see pics of that one, Thom.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It figures!!!

Yowzer.....now that we are here to see the gifts from the ice storm this winter.....well, let's just say that the limb litter is everywhere and there are whole trees down in our meadow. Good kindling and good firewood, I guess.

Victor....behave!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i guess that this branch on my coral bark jm that fell over and split from the ice storm is a goner. too bad

National grid workers are around cutting dead branches. We didn't have the heavy ice, but still down branches in the area. Their good maintanence prevented a log of grief.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Planted 6 euphorbias last year. So far, only one looks like it will return. Strange, since even though we had lots of snow, the temperature never got below 10°F.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Probably got too wet, Don. They are very sensitive to that. Need really well-drained soil. I also have lost some after winters with a lot of precip.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i just got 5 of them i have to remember that when i plant them.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Too wet? Hmm. Possible because of surfeit of snow, although they were in a mounded bed with generally sandy soil. Thanks.

What about 6 mil - damage. I got enough and ready to head for the BED!!! My days work is done.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, Don - I have lost a few that were planted in well-drained soil because of the abundant snowfall and the slow, steady melting. The soil never dries until all the snow is gone.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Don - sorry about the loss of your euphorbia! Bummer! I just noticed today that I lost one of my new coneflowers I got from garden crossings last year. I guess when all is said and done, that's not bad considering the winter NH had this year! I thought CFs were pretty rugged though.
