I put a borneo Giant in the ground last summer. It was doing fine until winter when it started to decline - I wasn't all that surprised, but I expected it to make it. We had a very cold week which fried all remaining leaves. I continued to hope it would return but the stem kept getting smalller and oozed water when I touched the top of it.
Today I decided to check it out by digging the thing up. I found some rotted roots as I expected along with the little bugs that love to feast on rot. I also found very healthy roots some which I broke as I dug it up. What would be the best course to take now that there is still life left in it? I may also plant it under some canopy for next winter's protection.
Thanks, Dave
Investigation of Borneo Giant underground - surprised findng
I sprayed the root base and top with Draconil. Then I put it in a tall pot with loose, fast draining soil. I drenched it with disease control.
Wish I could help --can't, but I'm very curious.
I'm going to follow this post, since I've tried overwintering some aroids attempting the method recommended by the BWilliams, "King of Aroidia", and I'm a bit worried I may find something like you have.
Maybe the Borneo Giant needs to be dug up each winter or kept in a pot.
Jerry, how sensitive are the roots? Do you just chop them short and they regrow?
I'm thinking if it does this each winter, it will never reach a large size, it will put it's energy into making new roots and then a new set of leaves.
