Unknown Seedling

West Plains, MO(Zone 6b)

I had some unknown seeds that I failed to label from a couple of years ago. On a lark, I decided to plant them and see what they were. Well, all six that I planted came up, and I still do not know what they are! I thought someone might recognize the seedling if I posted a photo. They came up quickly, right after the zinnias I had planted at the same time. I will also post a photo of the seeds - hard to get a photo of!

Those remind me of impatiens leaves, but I don't know for sure at all, nor about the seeds. I thought I'd chime in with that just in case it's helpful. Good luck!

Yes, it does look like maybe a New Guinea Impatien leaf - I'm not sure what the seeds look like, though.

Oh wow - yes it does look like that impatien. Do the seeds look similar, too? I know it is hard to tell from my picture exactly what the seeds look like. They do look like 4 o'clock seeds, but they are a LOT smaller. They are also very smooth and brown. The only reason I am not sure that it is that impatien is because I don't know how I would have gotten that seed. The seeds were in a plastic bag, like perhaps I gathered them. But it doesn't ring a bell.....I know I gathered seeds from cleome, black-eyed susan vine, verbascum, sunflowers, portulaca, and morning glory vine that year. Hmmm...I'm not sure what verbascum seedlings look like - I'm going to look that up.

Nope - doesn't look like a verbascum seedling. I thought I was on to something there - the seedling is so tall - about 5 inches. So it must be a large plant. Someone must have given me these seeds because I have no idea what it could be.

I don't think the shape of the seeds is right for impatiens, they are more pointed on the end http://www.flickr.com/photos/crazymokes/111383085/in/photostream/

I also think they're too large to be impatiens, although since you don't have anyting in the pic as a size reference it's hard to be sure. But they're small enough that it would be tough to get a good picture that's zoomed in enough to make them look the size they do in your picture.

the verbascum seed I have looks like the size of course pepper

Aha! I think the mystery is solved! I was talking with my mom just now, and she thought she had given me some impatiens balsamina seeds a couple of years ago. The seedlings match up!

Yes, now I know where to plant them - that is helpful! =) Thanks for getting me on the right track with the impatiens idea!
