Trumpet Lily relocation question...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hello all!! Great to see familiar faces over here...hoping the Lily Gurus can help me out with a goofy question. Now that I have a smidge more sense - I'm realizing that checking heights of plants goes a long way to placing them correctly...ugh. I've had 3-4 (?) Trumpet Lily bulbs in this one spot - this will be 3rd season for them. If, when they show there selves, I relocate them...will that harm them? Or would it be better to mark them and relocate come fall?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C, not a guru but I believe you can relocated once the blooms are spent.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

So better to wait until after they've bloomed vs moving them once they pop up above ground?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I think so, otherwise you may mess up blooming. Again, not a guru, just giving you my .02.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh Nery, my friend...I LOVE your .02!!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I googled transplanting formosanum I didn't find something addressing you ?. I dunno, it might be OK to transplant babies, this is such a hardy plant. Doncha hate those answers? uhmmm, maybe yes, maybe no.

Ahh you're a sweetie - thank you for trying. I've got plenty of time..we'll see if someone else pops in with some additional words of wisdom...

Last Summer I dug up some of my Asiatic's to give my DGS some bulbs to take back home..
Well they bloomed just fine..and today I redug them up cause they need to be moved
and this is what I got...mind you every one of them was a single bulb last year...
I think as long as you replant them right away and water them good they should be fine...

The same thing happened to me last year with the trumpet Emerald Temple. I dug around about two weeks before they were going to bloom and found that each single bulb appeared to have morphed into three huge bulbs fused together. I was afraid to divide them. So I took a shovel, got under one of the masses, levered it out of the ground and into a new location (I did dig a new hole first). The clump bloomed only one week later than the bulbs I had not moved, and the flowers were perhaps 10% smaller. I shaould add that I lifted the same clump three times in two days to get it right. I gave it lots of compost and plenty of water.

What the heck? Trumpets are tough!

Ahhh ya'll are great....thank you so much! Course I could kick myself...i mean seriously - who in their right mind plant TRUMPET lilies in the front of their flower bed....albeit front corner...shessh

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Probably anyone of us at one time or another so don't feel too bad...LOL

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Ha ha, I did it too, had no clue they would get so tall! So don't feel bad you are not the only one.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

lilsista your pics make me want to go dig up one and see if they're as big as yours.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey Donna!! Phyllis - I think I recognize you from Brugs - yes? Ok so ya'll have saved my pride - LOL Although had I simply read the stats on the plant...welllllll...you know...

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

I try and dig them up every 2-3 years cause some get too crowded
Just be careful when you dig up the bulbs cause their never where you think they are
And you get sick if you cut one in half....LOL
Start out and work your way in..and keep an eye out for any babies...
You'll also learn the different blooming times for each type of lily...
and then do more rearranging....LOL
A never ending process...LOL but we love it...

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Yes Chantell it's us....from the Brug forum...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

"cutting one in half" - ok...see I think I'd cry... Oh mercy..."blooming times" - heaven help me...if I have to think beyond, color, scent, height...overload, overload...LOL

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

I just got my big babies back in the ground....It's a Big Oval where my doggies are at rest...
Planted them with some LO Lilies Trumphator will put some more Orientals in around them..
When I get them after they finish their Cruise from Holland....no hurry...LOL
I put some Daylilies around the outer edges mixed in with the Iris's
Put a layer of horse manure down and ran out of mulch 3/4th through...

Oh Phyllis! How beautiful that will be!! How long since your babies past?

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Rusty died the day Pete Rose hit his 500th homerun...20+ years ago..
Bed was a circle then..
Rinny died 14 years ago..
And Bear died about a year and a half ago....
Don't know if My daughter Amanda will bury the other 3 there when it's their time
Or put them on her property..They went with her when she built her house...
Walkers about 17 years old now...

Mercy it's hard isn't it...no matter how long or not ago...still can feel the pang. My first Rottie past 10 years ago...I have a niece and grand niece of his...still cry when I look at photographs of him...

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Here's a pic of one of my Stargazers that I just replanted last fall..
This one has morphed too...when you see more than one stem coming up (6 on this one...4 big ones and 2 babies)
then most likely they've morphed...
I'm not sure why so many of them have multiplied like this....
but it might have something to do with after they bloomed
I had to move them so I cut some of the stems off and didn't let them go to seed..
So maybe all the growth/energy went to the bulb instead...One of my Black Beauty lilies is coming up double too
Lots still haven't emerged yet...

Notice while I was out putting some stuff in the ground today that one of those lilies of mine are actually coming

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Yeah i'm in zone 5 and quite a few of mine are emerging..
I'm just hoping we don't get a really hard freeze

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Chantell, did you end up moving your Lilies? Just saw this thread, and as Nery said, after blooming is the best time to move them, but I have moved Lilies at various times during the growing season. Its risky, so the location has to be really bugging me before I do it, but if you're careful not to break off growth tips and can get a good root ball, they'll keep growing as if nothing happened. Trumpets tend to get taller each year for the first few years, so they may be extra out of proportion this summer, but it may be nice to have them so close to your nose when you walk past them :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Haven't moved them yet...finally got to play in the yard yesterday and got everything IN the ground that's hardy except the bulbs. So my plan was next Sat. to plant bulbs and move those....very carefully....my yards so small (townhouse) that I can catch the scent of just about everything...LOL

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

The scent is quite powerful, so close proximity isn't required, that's for sure, LOL. I like to keep Lilies away from the paths a bit so the clothing of passers by doesn't get stained by the pollen. Although I spend much of the summer with a stained nose, LOL.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Amen for stained noses!!! ^_^

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Nose, forehead, cheek, arm, it's just a way of life in the summer to have pollen stains somewhere. ;)
