Show your pet birds

Norman, OK

I have to believe that a number of folks here keep birds as pets. This is a pic of our Lutino Cockatiel, Peaches. She has been with us about 5 years. She was an escapee that showed up at one of my bird feeders. Although an obvious pet on the loose, no amount of coaxing would persuade her to fly to me. It took me several days of baiting an improvised trap with some parrot food borrowed from a neighbor to catch her.

Although she doesn't speak words, she regards my wife and I as part of her flock. She talks to us constantly in her Cockatiel dialect. She is intelligent. Recognizes many words and is a great watch bird. If anyone or any animal is in our front yard, she screams an alarm call. She also recognizes both our vehicles from others. When she sees my wife's car coming down the street, she immediately starts her alarm call.

The downside of keeping Peaches, is traveling with her. Birds in an RV are messy and a pain in the a$$.

Looking forward to seeing your bird.

red, She is so beautiful! That's quite a models pose she is giving. :-)

I tricked her into raising her topknot, pelle. I held her up near a window so I would have good light and asked her "Do you see those big black crows?" and you see the reaction. She knows 'big black crows' and has a fit when she sees them.:)

Beautiful bird dirt! I am only a fan of birds outside only! I owned a parakeet once when I was a teen. I couldn't get rid of that bird fast enough!

Cockatiels will always be one of my favorites. Be careful they are addicting. Here is a pic of one of macaws ( Phoenix) . I raised him about 3 years ago and could not part with it.

Macaws are cool! Sometimes I get the itch for something like a Macaw, but we travel a lot and that is a problem and at this stage of the game the bird would outlive me so I'd have to line up a guardian. My dau and son say 'No!' They don't want a bird. But Grandson #1 is willing. He currently has two Parakeets.

Here is a pic of him with a Lorikeet giving him a kiss.

I sure hope you're not being affected by any of these wild fires. Theres another person that I've seen on one of the forums that lives down in that area, can't remember the name . Hope you all are alright....This is horrible!!!!!...I used to live out at 128th and Anderson rd...and I just heard the news reporter say another fire has broke out at 149th and Anderson. Even though I yearn to live in the country, right now I'm glad I don't live out there......My thoughts are with all of those that have lost their homes. .....Karen

No fires around me I know of, but the wind has died down a little and I turned on my sprinklers just to be safe. Wind is unbelievable, blew away some of my patio furniture cushions. I went out and locked the wheels on my Weber grill because it was blowing across the patio and it toppled it over. They are reporting fires all over the state. 40-50 homes on fire in MWC. Thank God it is getting dark and this wind should die down.

Big culprit in these fires is Eastern Red Cedar. As a conservationist, I've fought it for 20 years. It is an invasive, dangerous phenomenon that most people fail to recognize for the threat it is. OSU estimates that it displaces over 5,000 covies of Bobwhite quail annually.

Whenever I go to one of the chain pet stores, I want to rescue them all the birds. I feel so bad for them. But I know they'll just think demand is up, etc.

I did see this cool cage once online that was perfect for parakeets and such - it was really tall and wide so they could actually fly around. It'd be like a piece of furniture it was so big. I really liked that because the cages they sell are so tiny.

She's a sweetheart of a Cockateil, Red

No big birds for me, they'll outlive me.

I love finches. My favorite is the Gouldian Finches . I would not have choose a big bird either. When my Father in law got sick he could no longer care for his 7 parrots so I ended up taking 3. I am a sucker for ALL animals. We have a full house!

Pretty little birds, burn. I sometimes look at some of the birds in my yard and think that they are more colorful than some of those sold in pet stores and kept by people. But, I can just look out the window at them and don't have to clean their cages!

Beautiful birds guys!

True Red, they are more colorful in my yard. I started out by adopting one of the finch. The lady that had it, was tired of it's singing. But after looking up info on them, I realized they needed companionship, and got another one at the pet shop to keep it company. I don't mind the cage cleaning so much. Fish are worst, to keep up.
