Jewel is a beautiful single dark pink blossom with some of the longest tendrils of any brugmansia I have grown. The 3-4 inch tendrils seem to extend out forever from the medium sized powdery smelling bloom.
The downside to Jewel is that she is a VERY slow grower. Here in Fort Lauderdale (land of the giant brugs) she has remained a very compact plant. The plant here in the picture is almost 3 years old. This is her first flush and she has quite a few buds coming in behind this one.
This is a pod sister to Fleming Island Rachel. The cross is Kleine Lady x Everlasting Ruby by German hybridizer Ludger Schneider and grown here in the states by John Scott.
This one, like Rachel was just recently released by the seedling parent.
Fleming Island Jewel
Beautiful!!!! Well worth the wait. Have you tried growing it in the ground?
I've been too afraid. She grows like molasses flows. Last summer I came home and she was nothing but a stick with no leaves. I have carefully nurtured her to blooming age. I think my first course of action is going to be to wait until I can get a small branch cutting of her so I can root it and have a backup plant....just in case! I think there may only be a handful of people who have this cultivar and besides myself I have only seen one other person post a picture of a bloom....This one is extremely rare so I will try to make sure that we get to keep it around for quite some time.
BTW i will be attempting to pollinate the flowers with it's pod sister Fleming Island Rachel, however it has been very hot here so many of my latest attempts have failed. My hybridizing window is closing fast! It's 91 degrees right now in Fort Lauderdale!!!
We had a high of 63 today and expect freezing weather tonight. My Brugs are still waiting to so outside. With something that rare, I'd be careful too. She looks small enough to sit on your lap when you head back up north. A small jar or two of pollen don't take up much room.
So my attempts at pollinating this past summer may not have been all my fault. lol!
Very pretty Gary. I hope she continues to live and grow well for you.
I found out from Delisa yesterday that she and I are the only ones that have this cultivar....which of course doesn't make me feel any better......
Jewel has several more blooms and has achieved a color similar to ripe raspberries. Two of these blooms (as well as the first one which is already a memory) were hit with Fleming Island Rachel pollen. The third bloom in the picture was pollinated with Herbszauber pollen. Now the waiting game begins....will she or won't she take pollen....
Gary, she's gorgeous!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed hoping she does take the pollen.
