Freesias in SoCal

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

I have some Freesias in a pot and I reckon it's time to plant them after they bloom this year (they have buds now). When and where should I put them in this climate? The only place that gets partial shade is under our pine trees, where, of course, there is a lot of pine needle mulch. Will this do? They will get late afternoon sun there, but nothing harsh while they are blooming in the Spring. I have some native Irises there now and they have not bloomed yet (this is their second year). Advice?

They'll grow in full sun where you are, or in partial shade.
Fun bulbs, and they multiply like crazy ! You can leave them in the ground all year where we are.
Just give them well drained soil.

Thanks, JD, I figured you would pop in here.

Hah! Well-drained soil? What's that? Oh, you mean the dg pile where DH is doing construction? I can do drainage tests two feet apart and get totally different results. I'll just pick a place and stick them in. So I can just plant them after they bloom?

yes, or go ahead and plant them now if you want. Just put a marker where they are so you don't accidentally dig them up when they're dormant. They'll grow in spite of you ! LOL

I need them to grow in spite of our soil! LOL

Thanks, JD.

KC,
I have some freesias in the ground and some in a pot that I haven't transplanted yet in the green house. Both bloomed at the same time.
My freesias out in the b.fly/h.bird garden in the raised planter have started blooming this past week. They will grow and bloom either way. Surprise! Sending you a photo of them blooming. Taken on April 2, 2009.
Hope this helps.

Good to know, SW. I'm going to plant them and hope they spread.

KC,
Both of mine are planted in ground similar to yours. Maybe a little more dirt, but a lot of dg. I think they will do fine outside, except maybe for the wind. Plant in sheltered area if possible or prepare to prop up those beautiful sprays of freesias.
