I am asking for older types of herbs in the plant and seed trading forum for an historic house site. These herbs need to have been around prior to 1866. But I also have some inappropriate plants that I must get up. One thing I see are some bearded iris. Is it all right to dig them now? If I transplant them, will they bloom this year? I suppose I could give some away some of them. But I don't know what colors they are, because they haven't been divided in many, many years. In this case, if you want some and once they bloom, you decided you don't like/need a particular color, feel free to trade them away...........................Betty
digging iris.....Now?

I wouldn't dig iris up until after last chance of frost unless they are going into pots till then, the roots wouldn't be able to get re-etablished in frozen/cold soil. If they are bearded iris they have the risk of rot with unestablished roots. They probably won't bloom either, I would reccomend waiting, if at all possible until after they blossom, or until it is warm if nothing else.
