OMGosh!! ...too cute! I love these

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I think this has to be the cutest planter for av's that I've ever seen. Who doesn't have a pretty teacup, or entire tea set?

Most are packed away, collecting dust.

what a great way to display your avs AND your pretty tea set! You can buy it like this, or just buy the inserts to insert into your favorite teacups.

she also had inserts for MUGs!!

I LOVE It!!

most of you dont know me well, but ive collected things for a long time, ive got some flower pots that have comic charactors on them
superman ,batman, capt marvel and wonder woman, id love to find a way to use them but these dont have holes in them
theyd be fun too,im too nervous to drill them out,any suggestions, these are about the size of 3 inch pots, maybe 3 half, and now
they are vintage since they were made in 76,ive got the glasses and all kinds of stuff from that kind of stuff

JIM
wonder if i should put on my batman mask for a pic
lol

( Kim) Zion, IL(Zone 5a)

Can't you just put perlite in the bottom than the plant than some dirt I hope cause I think that is whaT I will do
OH and Jim about the batman mask I don't think so you want to scare everyone LOL
Dimmer

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Jim,
Maybe you could put another pot inside of it.I'd be afraid to drill too.
Let's see that picture ^_^.

I use small plastic containers as inserts inside the pretty, more decorative vintage cups and vases etc. I've been doing this for years. I recycle those little plastic applesauce/fruit containers and also use the round plastic zip lok containers that come in a couple of different sizes. You just have to be careful when watering that the water doesn't sit for long inside the inner container so you don't end up with root rot.

Whenever I give plants as gifts I try to find an inexpensive but pretty container, to dress up the plant. I use candle holders, vases, pitchers ... put a little plastic cup inside to catch the water in case the recipient wants to use the decorative container for it's original purpose!

This picture is just some plants I have sitting around the house.

Plastic containers used to catch water. On left is an applesauce container and a fruit cup. On right are two different sizes of zip lok containers.

There are many different sizes of plastic containers that can be recycled/repurposed for other uses.

I wouldn't want to take a chance on drilling holes in good, vintage china or putting perlite and soil and planting directly into anything worth money ... you end up with soil stains, salt and chemical build up which will ruin fine china, porcelain etc.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Ibrabec-
she sells them for 12 for $30...not bad! Email me if you would like the source.

Dimmer-yes, that would be really pretty inserted into your Demitasse china, but probably not best in a china cabinet...

I was thinking of doing this with my tea set, by displaying them on a long decorative shelf, on a wall that got the right amount of sunlight.

Jim-that is the beauty of these things! You use your own containers and the containers cannot have holes, but Plantladylin's idea would be a great one for you, if you are worried the water might leave water stains.

But, as for me, I think I'm going to purchase some. It is a waste for my tea sets to just sit boxed up for "some day", so at this point, even if they get a little water stain, at least they will be used, and not just sit in a box.

It doesn't have to be an expensive tea set, and if you look at her things, she uses pitchers, planters, teasets...anything that will hold water. She has teacup size, and mug size, and then says to email her if you want custom...

Thanks seedpicker!

I used to have 100 teacups, but I cut back to about 50 of my favorite :-) Could you use Solo cup cut down a little for inserts. Next time I need a quick gift I'll try that.

(Zone 1)

Sure, you could cut down any size of solo cup to use inside a pretty container.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

of course you could, but the problem I find with the solo cups is that they don't last long since they are just paper, and get moldy. But, for short term the solos would work great.

Some people can find the plastic solos, but none of my grocery stores carries anything but the paper ones

These are permanent, and are not glazed, so the water can soak into them.

I just think they are cool, because it seems we all have a broken set of something, and this is a nice way to display your teacup and your plant :0)

(Zone 1)

The Solo cups I buy are plastic. Actually "Solo" I think is a brand name, not sure if that's the brand I get at Wal-Mart, they come in real small to real large sizes.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Lin and Seedpicker,
Thanks for the great ideas!! I buy the plastic Solo type cups at the dollar store and they last for years! I really like those inserts and they are a very reasonable price, but too much if you need a large quanity.
Lynn

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I thought twelve was a lot...how many would you need?

I think my tea set serves only six, and then I thought maybe I could find some pretty teacups at the thrift, or consignment stores, for the other six.(to give away)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

If you used them for every plant it could be hundreds.Of course I could just use them for plants I wanted to put on display.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

whoa...yes, solo cups way more affordable in that case, lol...

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

if you go to shopgoodwill.com you will find all kinds of pretty cups & saucers,

I have a sister who has a really beautiful home with a gorgeous formal dining room. She entertains a lot, and I keep thinking how those pretty little teacup's with blooming AV's inside would make lovely place settings on the table! She's not really into plants but I'm going to share this with her. I bet she'd love that idea for one of her dinner parties!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

That is a great idea, and with tiny name tags, like plant tags, to mark each guests' seat :0)

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I bought these cups @ Cash and Carry, it's a restaurant warehouse, you can buy bigger containers, etc. I got about 50 for $9.00. The domes were another package, about the same price, but more lids. I used them when I started my leaves, but have since removed them. [good or bad?]. They are made from corn ECO-PRODUCTS. Cheryl

wow, thats a good deal, wish we had that here, we do have similar to the rest, warehouse, but they don't sell anythuing like that here.they look like regular domes to me. what size are they? also what size are the cups?

bonnie

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

the cups are a little large, they are 12 oz.. But we have a lower humidity and the soil does dry out pretty fast.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Now THAT would be very affordable for 100s of leaves, for sure!

I don't have that many...I just bought a dozen each of the ones I posted, ha-ha-ha :0)

Hopefully one of the two sizes will fit my tea set

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Cheryl,
I love those domes for bigger plants.I need to check out our restaurant supply houses! Do you know what they called them?
Lynn

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

When I managed Starbucks-- the box said "Dome Lids". If you can't find 'em at a restaurant supply you may be able to talk someone into selling you a sleeve of lids and matching cups. Be sure to try a place (like Starbucks) that doesn't inventory cups.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

cheryl;
can you buy some of those for anyone on this web site?like me. lol i have never seen them available here & i did try once to buy them from dairy queen, but they would not sell them.they are perfect for humidity loving plants or new babies, i thibk i will try our mcdonalds, maybe they will sell me some?worth a try.
bonnie

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

Where I got them is 175 miles away.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)
