My 5 year old plumeria started to rot. One of the limbs was still fine so I cut it off, it is about 9" long and greenish but no leaves at the tip. It is soft not a hardwood. I stuck it in a mix of potting soil and perlite to a depth of 4" last evening. Now I am reading that I should have let it dry out for 2 weeks. I read further on another google search and am told not to let it dry out.
I put it pot and all under a terrarium to keep it moist and have since read to not let it get too damp?
What is the best method??? Thanks in advance,
Candee
Best method Plumeria Softwood Cutting
I don't know if my way is 'best' or not, but I just aquired some cuttings a neighbor was tossing - brought them home a week ago, stuck them in my bubbler, and they are rooting.
You might post on the Plumeria forum, I bet they will have some great advice for you. I think the usual method for rooting plumies is similar to succulents where you let the cut end callous over for a few days, then stick it in soil.
That is what I have read ecrane, DG pros said let it dry 2 weeks and then google couple sites said do it soon as cut and keep moist. Think I'll stick with the dg'ers. I posted in the plumeria thread as well, just no response yet.
Good to hear you have luck with your kay.
I bought mine 5 or so years ago and it was a dry stick and it did well all these years until recently so hope to get another started from it.
My Plumeria cuttings had the white 'nubbies' this morning, so I just finished potting them in a mix of 1/3 perlite, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 vermiculite. I also said a prayer to the plant god that they do well. I watered them in and won't water them again until they show signs of leafing out.
Those I have planted in the ground wintered over just fine - just now starting to show signs of putting on leaves.
I just cut them off and throw them in a bucket in my garage. You can let them dry out for a while, 4 weeks or so and then put a little root hormone on the end, stick it in pottiing soil. They root very easily. I would stay away from peat I think it will hold more water than you want.
Thanks got mine on a shelf with sunlight to dry out?
Forgot something. They need heat to root well. Black pot in full sun or if outside temps are to low bottom heat will be needed. Sun sun sun, these guys can't get enough. They like water but will rot if left sitting in water for long.
Doesn't have to be in the sun, they'll dry out on their own and form a callus over the end. Once the callus is formed you can plant them.
Thanks core, and when I do pot it it will be in a black pot and will put the heat mat under it.
