This is from a friend of a friend living in Northern Wisconsin.
He found the creature, apparently a larva, amongst his firewood. That's all I know other that I have never seen such a specimen before.

CLOSED: Found On Firewood
This is a larva of a beetle in the family Buprestidae (Metallic/Flat-headed wood borers). Fortunately, it does not appear to be the recently introduced emerald ash borer - see http://tinyurl.com/d77wfk for an image.
News update - Emerald ash borer had been found in Hudson Country, apparantly already there for at least five years.
That is bad news...
