Is this a specfic plant or any epiphyllum can gro like this?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

This picture was taken in my neighborhood - the cactus is climbing on a palm tree trunk. I have a number of various epiphyllums and they all grow in clumps, none of them wants to climb. I have planted pieces near tree trunks, fences, but they don't grow at all, some are unchanged in size after 2 years. I have seen other arrangements in San Diego (cactus growing over a gate on a trellis, etc) so it clearly can grow big and climb tall. But how does one make it happen?

I think it depends on the type of epi. I have some that clearly would love to climb as they put out roots along the growth. One that come to mind is the "Fish bone" or "rick rack" eps.

If your plants have not changed in 2 years then maybe there is something wrong in the soil or the feeding of the plants.

Here is one going to top and down again in Key Largo Fl. Tree is maybe 30ft.

wren - do you have suggestion for soil or feeding? I have clay soil with alkaline ph

I would mix in sand and peat, and some compost if you have it. feed 10-10-10 monthly except Dec, Jan and Feb when you do not feed or feed 0-10-10 and you can use the beer fert. to.

Thanks for the suggestion wren, I will try it out

Most plants even epis are very forgiving. But clay soil or pure sand are hard on most of them. I have a clay pan about a foot or so down and this courses problems. Roses love clay but hate our weather. LOL

Good luck on your plants.
