CLOSED: Interesting little wasp

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I'm just getting around to getting last summer's insect images edited and filed.

Any ideas on this guy? I'm in west KY

This is a parasitic wasp in the family Chalcididae, bearing a strong resemblance to the species Conura nigricornis - see http://tinyurl.com/dxb69n for an example. The greatly swollen hind legs are characteristic for this family.

I believe that you are right, given the individual differences that one would encounter between KY and MA.

Here is a shot similar to the one in your link

I'll let Ken fix a spot for him/her and get it added to BF. There isn't a Chalcididae Family section yet.

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

I have created an entry for Conura nigricornis here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/5583/
thus introducing the family Chalcididae to BugFiles.

Let me know when you have added your images and I will select one to illustrate the family in the index,

I cropped a tighter shot for better detail, now you have 4 to choose from.

Thanks Mel, I have made a selection and the family is now illustrated in the index: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/browse/order.php?bid=138

Good!

Hopefully I'll have some other oddball bugs this year as well.

WOW. Its back legs look almost like mantid claws.
