Something I saw just now that was very upsetting was the mail carrier at the feed store.. carrying a box of chicks.. tossed the box on a stack of feed like it was a parcel package and looked me right in the eye... I must have been white as a sheet... I told a customer, NO Wonder they are always dead when they go through the mail.. Did you see that???!!!! The customers just stared and didn't know what to say.. 2 guys said.. wow....and that was all. I was very upset.. even though I know it didn't hurt the chicks.. didn't he stop to think about the customers and how they would feel?
I don't know if the mail carrier was showing off or just didn't care.. but I am friends the the post master in Lodi and I'm going to report him.
Chicks through the mail - very upsetting
Good for you. Mangling a pack of seeds is bad enough but hurting living things is way over the line. No wonder the mail is always torn up.
Oyh My Heavens ZZ , That just burns me up! Thank Heavens the Peeps that work here at My local PO either raise Chickens or are real animal lovers, I just couldnt even imagine what they would think about a fellow worker being that cruel and thoughtless!
Go get ' em zz!!
I agree!!!Report him, there is no need of that.
That's awful. I don't like chicks in the mail at all really, but that is particularly disturbing. I'd like to toss him like a sack of feed and see how he likes it...
Unfortunately, many people do not like chickens. There is no excuss though when they are handling someone elses property!!!! I am with Claire!!! Lets get him!!!
We all know how brutal the postal service can be............ we all have bad days where when we finally think about it and wish we could take things back. Heck we have seen on you tube videos of how chicks are treated from the hatchery, before the PO gets them . I know it is no excuse but think for a minute. What happens if the PO just stops the live animals going thru their system. Just a thought.
Truth be had if they dont like their job many people would be happy to do it for them. When they are dealing with packages it is someones property. Thats the problem in my opinion. Even if its not chicks it belongs to someone and is important to someone. I know what you are saying, that everyone has bad days. I have them every now and again...LOL Even on bad days I would not treat others property like that. I may be grumpy but I try to put on my best face and go on especailly if I am being paid to do it.
A persons bad day, is just that. It's "their" bad day or "my" bad day. Not yours and mine, and certainly not the mail's fault, or those poor chicks, I agree with sewincircle, jobs are too tough to find right now. There are a lot of people that would gladly take that job right now. But we all have to remember, "you can't fix stupid".
I agree had shipped package marked fragile and was told it was a mess when it get there.
Sorry if if gremmer , spelling off fingers hurt.
makes you want to put him in a box and toss him and see how he likes it. what a Jerk.
zz, what do the chicks look like that you got off ebay? the fun hatch. I remember the little naked neck guy and his brother. I have some too, but can't figure out what they are. One looks like a silkie, has the cute little top fuzz. the rest, not sure.
thanks
Kim
Naked necks are also called Turkens aren't they??
All right ZZ's Get a rope. We'll all meet up at dead mans gulch. When that durn pony express mail carrier comes thru, we'll turn ZZ.s loose and watch the fun. I can see it now SMACK DOWN POSTAL MANIA!!! WOOOHOO YEssssss.
Giddy-up!
Yup, Turkens are the same as Transylvanian Naked Necks.
I have never heard of Transylvanian Naked Necks! They sound Vamp. hehehe I dont have any turkens. Just the showgirls and silkies. They all have the black skin and 5 toes. Cute as buttons. hehehe Are turkens pink skinned? I noticed in Jackpot, ZZ's the skin is pink. CUTE!
Head em up and move um out! YeeeHawww! *shoots gun in air* *BANG BANG BANG* (so wild west) LOL
LOL Sewincircle - "vamp" chickens! Tee hee hee! My older NN hen is pink skinned but her naked neck bit is really quite red more than pink. I used to worry that it was sunburned or something but it's always that way so I think it's normal (?)
I would think the other chickens would peck the naked neck. What are show girls.
Kim, I posted a recent pic of Jackpot.. I got 3 silkies, one black frizzle that I'm pretty sure is from her Cochin.. I guess she had a Turken Roo, a Cochin Roo and silkie hens? I can't remember 100%
Either way, sure was a FUN hatch!
That is a very odd looking chicken. Is that a popular cross or something you came up with. What is a showgirl roo called?
The NN skin is pink when they are young--but apparently when exposed to sun it turns red--but I think Moxon is right, the roos really turn red....the girls stay pinker. ZZ and I have had problems, not with the other chickens attacking the NN, but with the NN getting injured more easily because when a roo or other bird grabs their necks the skin will tear. There are feathers to protect the other hens, but when a roo grabs a NN's neck there is no protection.
Fortunately they heal really well. Pardner.
zz I saw the pic he is cute
CajuninKy, he was such a beautiful bird!
ZZ has me babysitting her Shamo chicks--well they are a lot more like 1/3 grown--and they are so delightful. Intelligent and interactive. More so than the other chickens actually. And I have two Game chicks (another person's) that are absolutely adorable. I think Game birds get a bad rap because people use them illegally. Most of them aren't even aggressive to other breeds. And they like people! I was reading about a man who used to travel everywhere with his favorite Game Cock in the passenger seat of his pickup. I can really see it now.
My Thai game birds are very nice but they are egg eaters. Other than that, they are very non aggressive and often shy compared to my other birds.
Most of them like to be handled. Even the roos. But if they are truly game, the roos will fight other roos like crazy. They have to be kept apart. It is also true that you can't train them to fight and you can't make them fight. They either have game or they don't. All roos will fight but the difference in the game cocks is that they don't quit. They are not looking to establish dominence and then live in peace in the pecking order. They nearly always fight to the death. Game hens can be vicious too. Asil cocks have to beat the hen in order to breed. And Asil hens will gang up on the young stags and kill them. They are some hard core gals. I saw some pretty game cocks at the market today. Most of them were Hatch.
Here is a pic of the Hatch roo I have borrowed. I couldn't replace my MacCrea Roundhead roo so this is the next best thing.
Are they Saipans?
I don't know. I just know they are called Thai chickens and they were rescues from Chicken Run Rescue in Minneapolis, and they got something like 150 birds in a huge cock-fighting bust. I had 3 roosters and 6 hens but the winter virus I had took out the roosters and 1 hen, so now I have just the 5 hens.
When do the roos start serious fighting? I've heard with Shamo that they sometimes start almost from hatching. ZZ's Shamo are not fighting at all--they sleep in a box by the back stairs with my crippled Sikie, Mattie, and wander around the yard all day with dozens (!) of other breeds. I am not sure if they are pullets or hens--one has a lot of bare spots--which seems to be common with Shamo and other Asian Game.
Saipans are from Thailand and they grow to be huge, heavy chickens. They almost have hooked beaks like birds of prey.
I have never heard of the Shamo. I will have to google them.
They look a lot like the Shamo.
It must be the "doo". He's a real looker. I like the yellow mantle.
I'm not sure if they are Shamo - having looked at the pics of Shamo on Google, they do not have that tall stance. They are more squat.
Thanks Cajun - he's one of my favorites. I haven't got any female brabanters, just him!
I wonder if the tall stance is a roo thing? Because ZZ's Shamo are not standing tall....but they are very gamey. I think they may be pullets.
Hey Mox: That Brabanter look in color a lot like ZZ's Americana Roo. Even the breast from what I could see. Gorgeous bird. Haystack
