Albino

Aschaffenburg, Germany

First I thought it was a matter of not having provided enough light...but this wasn't the case. I think I have an albino...

Hi Martin,

I had one (can't remember from which variety), but it died down shortly after the first set of true leaves appeared...

I hope it won't do, but it might because there is no chlorophyll in the leaves. However, it's not in the full sun, which may help.

Here are the cotyledons of a tricolor that I bought last year at ebay. The photo was clearly nils, but identified the seeds as tricolor, somewhat smaller than the usual heavenly blue. What I find interesting is that the cotyledons seem to be variegated. I have never seen a pictoee edge or variegated leaves in tricolor before.

The cotyledons do resemble I. tricolor don't they, Martin?

Martin - The 'albino' here

may respond to different wavelengths of light...try red or different wavelegths of blue,if you have different types of bulbs...sometimes the chlorophyll associated enzymes occur in chemically analog forms and sometimes respond to other than the usual frequencies of light...

look like I.tricolor at this point...here are the variegated leaves (?)...

Perhaps I caused a misunderstanding by having said that I didn't provide enough light. I am growing the MGs outside with other plants such as poppies or impatiens, so sometimes there is rivalry for light, I then cut away some leaves of the poppies for example...

Hi Martin - Nope,no misunderstanding...

I was simply suggesting that sometimes certain types of artificial light having peaks in certain wavelengths can work to get a seedling going (and / or to be maintained in the long run) where regular sunlight or regular bulbs might not work as well...

Most people use regular growlights but there are bulbs out there with different spectral output curves and you never know what somebody just might have access to...

so, my response was intended to address whatever you might be able to actually or potentially apply now , or for the benefit of anyone else who may be reading through these threads at some point in the future...

I also think it is rather acer than a MG...

Dany, I think you were right....I just noticed it's gonna die too bad, really.

I've doubs ! Acer or no Acer that's the question - one day I'll find again this Japanese forum but I remember that the owner of the plant was asking if this vine is sick.

I' ve cotyledons albino , they come from Emma's Silky Blue cultivar - seeds were tane

Wow! That's really interesting that the Japanese Maple had albino colored leaves. Besides lighting, what else would cause something like that?

There are a lot of plants that do have white leaves. I just received some Aaron Caladium tubers. http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/2016489270101832849DRkosM I a few tubers several months ago in a co-op on DG. I liked the "white" leaves because I have some shady, dark areas in my garden that need some light colored leaf plants to make those areas more interesting and awake.
