I am smart about perennials and orchids but know very little about shrubs. This older rhodie is not perking up this spring. It's in front of the house, too. Should I trim it down? Or will new growth replace these sad leaves?

Wait to see what happens - give it till at least the end of May to see if the buds open OK or not.

Likely, yes. You may find even that the flowers are killed but the leaf buds are OK.

Have you tried watering it over the winter?
It looks like it dried out dessicated. New growth looks
great though. Weird.

The growth at the base was presumably protected from dry winds by snow cover.

How do you water in winter in MI?
BTW, I have another rhodie that looks great but it is protected by other shrubs and older pines. Other rhodies on the same side of the street (east) at several neighbors look like this one. One mile away, the Nov ice storm was brutal on trees. Many had no power for 7-8 days. I was lucky because I would have lost 300 orchids. It really shook me up. Need to save up for a generator......
