Lavender and Rosemary

(Clint) Medina, TN(Zone 7b)

I rooted some Rosemary cuttings in water and had 100% success. I bought some French lavender and was wondering if anyone had had luck rooting it in water. It's very similar looking to the lavender so I'm thinking it would work. If it does, I'll post a picture of it. The Rosemary rooted within 3 weeks under my grow light and the roots are huge. I sure hope I can root lavender this easily!

Really - how did you root the Rosemary, if you don't mind giving the secret of your success? Did you use heat?

I wish I could help you, but I haven't tried lavender before, either.

I just took a few cuttings of the rosemary and removed the bottom leaves. I put them in a plastic cup with about a quarter inch of water. Placed in a sunny location and every single cutting rooted. I'll post a pic of one tomorrow.

Have you been able to make the transition from water to soil yet? That is often where my attempts at rooting in water fall down and go boom.

Hey, where's Brownsville, neighbor?

(Clint) Medina, TN(Zone 7b)

Brownsville, is about an hour east of Memphis.

I've had good luck planting these after they've rooted. What I do is let the roots get very large before I pot them up. These are ready to be planted. I'll post a pic of them after they're potted up and growing. Another thing I've been doing is add Hydrogen Peroxide to the water I water my potted cuttings with. I also put a little in the water with the cuttings while they are rooting. It's making a big difference. I'm also throwing in a little Epson salts. I bet anything the Lavender roots also. I really want it to because it's the French lavender and I can't afford to buy all the plants I want. I want lots of them!

Okay - I remember, now. My DH was raised in Ripley, if you're familiar. We live east of Nashville, just south of KY.

I'm hoping to hear your success with the Lavender as well. I purchased 3 very small plants the other day, hoping to propagate off of them into some more to begin using the blooms for sachets. It will likely be next year before I can start hacking on the poor things.

I know Ripley well! That's where they grow the tomatoes!

LOL!

My first attempt at lavender in water failed. I'm going to have to try something else. I will try something else and let you know if it works.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, pirl! I'll try that tonight. This plant I bought is very nice. It's French Lavender. I got seeds for Spanish Lavender. I don't know what's different about them. The seeds are up too so maybe that will grow for me.

We grew the Spanish ones one year, from seed. They were very lovely but it's always Provence that captures my heart.

I've done Lavender last year, and they rooted well in pots. Just took cuttings and put them in the soil, no rooting hormone was used. Mine were English Lavender.

What time of year did you take the cuttings?

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I took, mine in late spring, as I was trimming the bush, couldn't bear to throw the good shoots away. :)

That's good to know. I'll try it.
