shade plants germinated, how much sun?

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

The coleus and impatiens are doing well in the house, but they need to be repotted and move to the greenhouse (new this year.) I know they grow in the shade once they are full grown. Should they be in the shady part of the GH now or do they need sun to get started then moved to shade? I hope this makes sense. Thanks!

I have a bunch of different coleus out in the GH right now - but you also should know that some coleus like more sun than others. Mine are shaded by the GH tables after noon or so.

Impatiens - I have not the slightest, sorry!

Thanks, I'll put them in the shadier part first and go from there. I need the room back for my son's visit at Easter.

SOL - let's see, should we keep the son indoors or the babies?

If I could fit an extra long bed in the GH, he'd be perfectly happy out there. He lives high in the mountains in Colorado, loves being outdoors. When he was little I used to have to drag him in when it was bedtime. He sleeps with his window open nearly all year.

Impatiense, if I remember correctly, need part sun, not full sun and appreciate humidity. Coleus, depending on type do better with the same light so the color don't bleach out. I would give both sun until noon and bright light the rest of the afternoon.

If after growing in the house, you put them in the sun, they would burn. You have get them used to sun gradually, even in a greenhouse.

Years ago while living in NE, I owned and operated a commercial greenhouse. I had parts of the greenhouse set aside for different light situations by the use of greenhouse shade cloth attached to the roof. There is always one area in a greenhouse that receives less sun, than the rest, even no sun. Use that to your advantage.

thanks, I appreciate all the input.

Hi all you gh experts....This is of great interest to me as a newbie to gh land.
I have some nasturtium in there and was wondering the same thing. I end up shuffling them all over the place as I am undecided where they should be-under the top shelf or on top. I guess i'll put them where they only get a bit of sun. Does that sound o.k.

I thought nasturtiums wanted full sun?
