Neighbors CUT shade canopy from my West facing garden HELP

Kristin, that part of Portland is that low a zone? I'm surprised by that. I, too, was wondering if you were in the mountains.

Portland, I know what you mean about halibut. There is something altogether too human about those eyes. I can't bear to see them caught on a line, even though I love their flesh. OOh. That really makes me sound carnivorous, doesn't it?

(Judi)Portland, OR

Well Pix I am carnivorous. Very carnivorous. It's the fact that one eye migrates through a neural tube that gets me. However, I got over it and love to eat them!

Oh yes, they are delicious!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

We moved to Bend from San Diego County 7 years ago. I knnow now how spoiled we were in the plant growing department.

Now I live in the high desert where it is frozen half the year and the other half has no water....and I work in Eugene... where I don't knwo how anything grows because the sun never shines.

grrrrrrr...

I still don't think I would trade back...but I miss the tomatoes from April to November.

susybell and Pixydish, my zone is probably not as low as zone 6b,maybe I'm being to conservative. The winters seem to vary here, so I've been trying to guess. I know the Sandy area is colder, and I've been to North Plains a few times, does seem like it'd be colder too.

Portland1(Judi), the Hawthorne District is close enough, what zone are you?

This sight is such a help to me
Thank You so much,
Kristin

I think I'm in zone 7-8. Some days this past winter it seemed like zone 3!

Truer words were never spoken! I used to be closer to zone 9 than zone 8, but now I feel as though I better not buy anything that can't survive zone 7 just to be safe. Even then, who knows what next year will bring? I thought last year's spring was slow, cold, and wet but this year has it beat.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Except it's not so wet.

Yep, that's true.

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

it does rain a lot here, but not as much as parts of WA. The natural rainfall helps keeps so many areas lush and greeen! So different than Southern CA, some summer days were so hot and dry with the Santa Ana winds that we had to water twice a day for very small plants or vegatables. I used to use the Sunset Western garden book (when I lived in CA) that was before so much info was available online. Do you think anyone would be interested in adding the Sunset zones to our preferences to help with rainfall and marine layer info. Doesn't anyone know more about these Sunset zones? I've only lived in western states so I don't know how helpful they are, or how well know they are in other parts of the states, or other countries.

Thanks so much,
Kristin

"winds at 15-25 mph. A winter strom warning remains in effect in the Cascades with an additional 2 inches on the way today.

Have a Great Day!"

Grrrrrr....Ginger

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

We are due for a frost tonight and then 58-60 degree temperaturs and sun tomorrow!! It's look pretty bright out there today - finally. The puddles at the front of my neighbors’ property are so full there were ducks playing around them this morning.

Beadmom, you may be getting the storms that just blew through here. Lots of precipitation. It felt like I was living in a rainforest. Oh . . . wait - I AM living in a rainforest.

Kristen - I think your suggestion is a good one. Try posting it on the forum Dave's Garden - that's where most people give input about the site.

Kathy

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

It's hailing right now.....

Grrrrrr...

Ginger

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Hunker down . . .

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Have to drive home tonight over the pass. Tripcheck cams look NASTY....

Still.. "There's no place like home."..and after last night at the Motel....
"There's no SWAT team at home.."

Ginger

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Good luck and safe travels. If you can just get across before it freezes . . .

(Judi)Portland, OR

Ginger - you live in Bend and work in Eugene? Your commute must be horrible! Do you stay in Eugene during the week? I am feeling so sorry for you!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I'm feeling sorry for me too..
I do stay in Eugene durring the week and that's how thats how I crossed up with the SWAT team last night. There were bank robbers holed up in my Motel.....

EXCEPT.. I get to meet with the Pres of the Daylily club tonight before I head home and see (see=BUY) some daylilies.. That cannot happen in BEND>!

Ginger

(Judi)Portland, OR

Bank robbers in your motel!!! Now that's something you don't get to experience every day, thankfully. What kind of work do you do, if you don't mind my asking? I am a retired architect and I'm looking for a part time job to supplement my retirement income which is suffering because of the economy. I would like to do something besides architecture but I'm not sure what...

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I'm a corporate trouble shooter... but I had nothing to do with hunting the Bank Robbers...LOL

Ginger

(Judi)Portland, OR

Well maybe their mothers love them.

What is a corporate trouble shooter? Corporate politics is what made me want to retire. I worked for Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum, which is one of the largest arch/eng firms in the world and rose very quickly through the ranks but when the closer I got to the top rung of the ladder, the less I liked the job!

My sister lives in Oakridge - do you go through there on the way to and fro?

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I do go through Oakridge....slowly....very slowly...

Corporate trouble shooting involves everything from
"Our well exploded get it fixed before it gets sucked up by liquification." to the "CEO's horse got out go get it." to LOTS and LOTS of corporate politics and the variable spying techniques that go with being in one camp or the other...

Ginger

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

beadmom, After what you do for a living, a few crooks next door probably wouldn't even faze you. ^_^

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

LOL.. Nope. Not so much.. But they did cause me to miss the last half of a new "Bones" if I didn't know it was recording at home I would have had to shoot them myself and get it over with.

Ginger

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Ha Ha My dad used to say "Just shoot 'em." I mostly agree.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Yep.. My Indian name would be "Swims with snakes".

Ginger

(Judi)Portland, OR

Ginger - I know very little about Oakridge other than it is small and my sister is not fond of it. Why do you go slowly...
Yes as Willow said a few crooks probably don't get you in a tizzy!

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

Kathy, I did post a tread in the Daves Garden forum, subject: Climate Zones, if you want to read. And how funny seeing ducks in your neighbor's yard. It's been hailing here the last few days, should be nice and sunny this weekend.

Thanks,
Kristin

Eugene, OR

Thanks for the update Ginger, I was going to ask if it was the Pleasant Hill bank. I live on HWY 58, just down the road from Pleasant Hill. Incredible, they hit it twice!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

OK, Kristin. Keep us posted on their response.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Funny - there was no hail here in my area of Portland and the tv weather said nothing about hail. We just had rain. Kristin where in the world are you?

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

You drive slowly because their main source of funding comes from ticketing people going over 35 through town.. That is a set the cruise control and leave it town.

Ginger

Eugene, OR

Judi....I've it hailing in the front yard but not in the back. LOL

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Love 'Bones'. Safe traveling. It was very windy today.

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

Judi, the hail didn't last long 5-10 minutes I was in Woodstock after getting all groceries in the house.:) I was glad to get all that rain most of the week, last weekend I transplanted some Nandina off-shoots given to me by family.
I also updated my hardiness zone to 8, thanks for your help on that.
And I'll let all of you know of any response I get from the Daves admin forum re: Sunset Climate Zones.

Thanks,
Kristin

(Judi)Portland, OR

Kristin - I have to warn you. I think we are not a solid 8, more like 7/8. I worked in the yard all day today and there was a lot of chatting among all the neighbors. It was a really nice day!

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

Judi, Thanks, makes sense.

Nice Day today too, got to get outside,
Thanks again,
Kristin
