I think as gardeners we should plant a Live Oak tree (our Nations Tree), or any tree as a memory tree to honor the people who lost their lives in this tragedy.
Plant a Memory Tree
Where does one obtain a Live Oak tree? Any suggestions?
Hmm, didnt think of that, my brother got his at a tree & plant nursery already started. They are so common around here, i didnt think of where others might get them. This is gona sound stupid, but arent the acorns the seeds? Cant these just be planted? I know i can pick up a bunch of them off the ground if that will work.
Live Oaks arent good for ice storms in my area...any other good trees for a substitute do you think?
Is a "Live Oak" different than a common Oak? Please pardon my ignorance here...
I have lots of oaks on the ground and I can surely dig a baby up and move it ontu our yard here. That's what I'll do.
I am pretty ignorant on trees, but i know there are a few different types of Oak, I would think any Oak or any tree for that matter would be nice, as long as it is planted "In memory".
we have numerous oak seedlings that have self started. most are about 4 inches tall or so.
i could send some out for postage, if anyone is interested. ill post tomorrow to let yall know how many i have.

there are MANY varieties of oaks...live oak is not as cold hardy as many other oaks here...red oaks are beautiful...but more susceptible to stress, and insect damage because of that. I was in my master gardeners meeting today. The speaker talked about the red oak. I also know the live oaks, and pines are not able to withstand the severe ice storms we sometimes get here. The droughts, severe ice storm, now the wet summer all lead to tree stress, and vulnerability to insect attack. The speaker said the trees under stress let off a scent that the insects detect...such as beetles...and they move in on the tree.
So for my friends in the 7b-8a zone in Tx...we should pick another type of tree.....an oak is ok...but not a live oak...I have two pin oaks, a chinquapin oak, and a red oak in my yard already. The nuttall oak is supposed to be good for wildlife...but probably not as pretty of a tree as burr oak, or other oaks that are good in our area. White oaks here are great...but too large for most homes here. Any comments on a Sawtooth oak? I dont know much about them.
This would be a good opportunity for a co-op together. We don't have room in our yard for a live oak or any tree because of incoming power lines. Any suggestions for those short on space? We're open.
I love this idea. You could plant a dwarf of any kind of tree I think it is the thought , not the tree, gardenwife. And patch of cement in front , in memory of :
Now we are seeing some of the names of these innocent americans. Maybe you could pick an actual person to honor. Or all, My DH brought home a copy of the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the local paper. I will be putting this in my Hope Chest. To remember as well.I like the flag idea, the colors worn idea, and so on. But I will be giving Blood on Friday, in honor of them.
