Would like early yellow color in front bed-zone 6. Not interested in the leggy, tall ,usual forthysia.
What do you know about the newer , more-contained varieties? Mindia, Gold tide, Fiesta or others that you like or dislike.
dwarf forthysiayour experience/thoughts
I have a dwarf cultivar, but forgotten its name that grows low and spreading, where the branches touched the ground, those become natural layered thus new grow will take off, that's one of the characteristic that I've noticed.
I've mine thinking that I could train the thing into bonsai form, lol. The task hasn't materialized, the pot sitting in the garden and layered itself to the surrounding area. Not as I intended, but there will be plenty babies. One note is worth mentioning: the dwarf cultivar maybe grafted. Because the offsprings looks just like any other forthysias in the garden. :-)
would your variety be suitable to spill over a stone wall? I have an additional area where I now have bug-infested cotoneasters that soften a very tall and overwhelming driveway wall. Though it is not evergreen maybe the forsythia would help me there? Your thoughts...
There are Forsythia Arnold Dwarf http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/79751/ that I'm selling at the nursery I work at. Looks like a nice sized Forsythia currently blooming. Have you also thought of the White Forsythia (Abeliophyllum distichum) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1529/ ? Might be nice alternating between the 2.
I'm not sure what zone you're in but I've always like how Lonicera nitida 'Baggesens Gold' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54741/ cascades.
I haven't seen the dwarf variety yet but I have the usual forsythia & I want it to grow up my trellis to give me privacy..however they can be pruned to any size you want if you have the time.. forsythia's are "like a weed" they are hardy & will come back.
