what is the best way to start them once they have germinated in the baggies? i have tried peat pellets those kill the mgs if not watered like every day. they also get fungused easy.
was thinking someone once said they take the little cups you buy for the bathroom sink to rinse mouth out put dirt in them put back in baggy till big enough.
just curious the best way once they germintae how to keep them alive.
i know this probably has been asked but cant find the thread i was looking for. thank
starting mgs in what soil?
Imzadi, last year I used mosser lee ground sphagnum and had zero fungus, in in things I let go for 6 months. You also might consider using the little cups they use for tartar sauce, since they are so cheap. But you have to go to a restuarant supply to find them. United Grocers has them, so does Cash and Carry. I like the clear plastic cups so I can see the roots.
Another newer product that is starting to show up is ground coco fiber pellets. I don't know about the fungus with them though, Frank
I have a big question about morning glory seeds. I am putting up a lot of panels of cattle fencing of about 30 feet and would like to start the morning glory seeds in the ground. Our soil has a lot of clay (farm land that we call blackland soil) so could I amend it with enough gypsum and peat so that I could just plant directly in the ground?
Last year I put them all in big pots........want to try the ground but don't know if I am choosing automatic death for them! ^_^
ok to start them inside use six inch pots that drain put them in a flat so they can be watered from the bottom and put the top dome on till they start to sprout
as for outside the are not to picky about soil so if your soil is clay add some sand and peat moss and compost and they will be fine
if its the black soil that is good for garden vegies just add some compost and they will do fine and they can be directly planted out about half and inch in and they will come up withing two weeks I would pre soak the seeds in warm water for a couple of hours and water the soil also and they may be up in two to three days that way less chance that birds or animals will get your seeds
Thank you so much , scicciarella! That is what I wanted to hear...........we have plenty of compost that has broken down from cattle manure and cotton seed.................I know that pelleted gypsum works because that is what I used in the veggie garden............
I just don't have room under all my gro lights to start them inside...........right now...........
being in zone 9 you dont need to start them inside your growing season is very long in your shoes I would put like three seeds in each spot and then in a like two months add three more in each spot so as the plant starts to get over the blooming time cut it back and the new ones will take over
now remember in your zone they can get invasive since they seed so make sure to collect them every couple of weeks so they dont take over ok
be a responsible gardener
They won't spread too far as cattle are on the other side of the fence..................(LOL).........if they spread out here in the middle of the country , it wouldn't make a hill of difference...........
I love your idea of planting new seeds about every 6 weeks to 2 months as we will have beautiful weather until January..............
now you had better check to see if these will make your cow sick if they eat the stuff
I know that they will make humans very sick and if enough is eaten can even kill
so inform yourself before ok
ok so this is what I found
General poisoning notes:
Hallucinations are the predominant effect after ingesting morning glory seeds. Ingesting 200-300 seeds produces an effect equivalent to 300 micro g of LSD. Vivid visual and tactile hallucinations, as well as increased awareness of colors have been described. Symptoms include facial flushing, nausea, mydriasis, diarrhea, and hypotension (Spoerke and Smolinske 1990). Ipomoea tricolor has a long history of use as a human hallucinogen in southern Mexico, where the seeds were used in the preparation of a drink (Fuller and McClintock 1986). A single undocumented case of poisoning of a pet cat (after ingestion of seeds) has come to our attention. The cat showed erratic behavior and "looked like a lunatic". There was no apparent permanent damage afterwards. Several cultivars of Ipomoea tricolor are available in Canadian garden catalogs for home gardeners and, with few exceptions, no mention is made of any potential toxic affects from ingesting the seeds of these plants. Sample cultivars are ''Heavenly Blue'', ''Pearly Gates'', and ''Scarlet O''Hara''. The total alkaloid content is shown to vary, depending on the cultivar grown. It is advisable to remove and destroy the fruiting parts as they develop to avoid ingestion by children or pets.
so thinking that cows eat majic mushrooms lol and they only look funny in the eyes they should be fine with morning glories just pick off the spent flowers and seeds
it should be fine
Good information to have! I am putting the panels inside actually of the cattle fence..........and they are only there in that one spot when the calves are being taken away from the moms to sell them and that is only one day..............I am glad to know what you have printed. I have lots of grandchildren and never even knew that MGs have poisonous seeds.......will have to tell the kids...
but remeber only in large quantities so if you pick them off there will never be enough of them to harm anyone they talked about making people stone when they ate like two to three hundred seeds
I grow all kinds of stuff like caster bean and the dog and cat are smart enough not to touch them they sniff and walk away
I also grow daturas
I have found that most really toxic seeds have thorns on the pods which keeps the kids and animals away
Marie-imzadi - You can use use a fishtank or other improvised humidity chamber...look at what Shawna did here

I shared with Shawna generally about humidity and she simply improvised with excellent results...
You could easily try using the 2.5 gallon ziplock bags or the much larger clear refuse bags with something (internally or externally) to hold the bag open...
Generally, plants that have grown in a atmosphere with high ambient humidity need to be gradually acclimated to both a lower humidity atmosphere and direct sunlight or the leaves will shrivel up...
Mona - Please do not take my response as anything personal towards you but as I disagree with some aspects of the material that you posted and therefore am addressing those aspects with some contrasting material for consideration...
I consistently respond to offset any unsubstantiated or other potential over-generalizations regarding the toxicity of various Morning Glories...
You stated :
"A single undocumented case"
...the most important word is the undocumented part...
this example of the cat supposedly digesting starch loaded seed chunks has been in the past shown to be intentionally misquoted (by the ' well intentioned ' nannies of hype ) and taken from laboratory studies where large amounts of pure LSD was administered to various cats...
True Carnivores do not digest starch (as is found in the raw seeds of Morning glories) well at all and ingested starch will often cause gastrointestinal physical illness...
Omnivores are better equipped to digest starch as compared to Carnivores...
"I know that they will make humans very sick and if enough is eaten can even kill" so inform yourself before ok
Thank you for the good intentions...
Locating and posting a link to any peer reviewed journal where it has been documented that any type of Convolvulaceae has ever killed any human being would be most illuminating...
The fact the 'authoritative' source mentions the ''Scarlet O''Hara'' as one of the potentially 'dangerous' cultivar sheds some doubt on the alleged serious academic knowledge involved as Scarlett O'Hara is Ipomoea nil and does not contain LSA, but has a long history of safe usage in traditional medicine as a laxative and purgative as it is genetically and chemically most similar to Ipomoea hederacea...
The only MG's that have been shown to produce signs of toxicity in livestock have been Calystegia sepium (and closely related Calystegia species), Convolvulus arvensis (and very closely related Convolvulus species) and Ipomoea carnea..and require that large amounts of vegetation be consistently eaten over a period of at least several weeks to produce any effects at all in cattle or other relatively large livestock...the total amount of vegetative matter must be extremely large and that's the hardcore reality of the situation..
Please post links to documented cases in peer reviewed journals involving other species of morning glories and the amounts of the specific plant parts required to be ingested to produce physical toxicity ...
The lethal dose of purified LSD (d-lysegic diethylamide tartrate) in humans is postulated to be 7grams which is an absolutely titanic (!) amount that would be realistically quite difficult to obtain from any source...the lysergic acid amides (LSA) as present in some Convolvulaceae are approximately 1/10th the potency of LSD...do the math...
I have started a new thread to specifically focus on any toxicity of any Morning Glories here

Please consider familiarizing yourself with the posts linked to before responding further...
Please be sure to keep in mind that my response is focused upon the accuracy of the information presented and most definitely not on any person posting...
Thank you for your caution motivated posting...
