Hummingbird dive bomed DH

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I have been trying all summer to attract hummingbirds. I finally saw the first 2 on Sunday.
My husband left tonight to return some movies and walked by the flower bed that has the feeder and the hummingbird plants in it. he came back in and asked if they flew at night..i asked why and he said he had just been dive bombed by them. i guess they thought he was invading their space, lol
vicious boogers, huh?
i needed to smile : )
jen
p.s. that shouldve been spelled BOMBED...now would be a good time to crack a joke about growing up in mississippi, lol

Thank you. Trish and I were out in the front yard the other evening when we heard a loud "BBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" sound dive toward us. It was a hummer.

It hovered there, suspended just 1 foot away from Trish's face, looking at her, and then zipped across the yard and LANDED on our arbor!!

Unbelievable.

MsJen, can't beleive you are just now seeing Hummers. I guess you'll be seeing lots of them soon tho as they begin their trip back to Mexico. We will miss them after having them all summer. CindyM posted this great link on migratiion the other day - maybe you didn't see it.

The hummers aren't trying to hurt you when they do that, they are just checking you out to see if you have any sweet nector for them to feed on! LOL!
I keep feeders up from early spring until I no longer see them in the fall. There are times that they are so eager to drink the nector I provide that they are drinking from the feeders before I can even hang them back up after filling them. Several times I have been standing there holding a feeder while one is getting a drink. They are fantastic! They will buzz around my face and hover right in front of me. I know when the feeders are empty without looking, because there is one smart little male that will hover in front of my window, its like he is trying to get my attention. They will soon be gone for the year and I will miss them greatly. Now instead of seeing lots of them, there are only a few. We only have ruby throats here.
I plant my flowers with birds in mind. The seed eaters also get my attentions by planting flowers that make their favorite seeds and I NEVER deadhead their garden. After all, they got to eat to.
Between the flower gardens, the birds, and DG I stay entertained 24/7.

They have done that to me as well. I didnt have any feeders up for them but I was just outin the garden and one rounded the shed . I hear this loud bbuuuuzzzzzzzzzzzzz1 and I looked up and this 'huge bee' was coming right for me...EEEEEEKKKKKK!

LOL

Oh it was just a dern bird! A hummer! geesh I felt stupid!

Hey fivekulps, they do that on purpose just to make you go EEEEEEEKKKKKKK! Or maybe to get your attention, if you have the time to maintain it, you sure would get a kick out of watching them fight over position at the feeders. The ones here are like little tiny divebombers. I watch them with grins and giggles every day. Most amusing things I have ever seen.

LOL,,well my hummers have left for the year,,thank goodness,,they are a bunch of greedy little pigs,,I get the mean ones in the spring usually the rufus males are the worse,,and no they are not trying to see if I have food hiding on me,,I think it is a game for them to see how low they can swoop with out hitting one of us,,and we have been hit,,they also like to chase down the dogs,,my sisters big dogs get so scared they refuse to go out by themselves,,LOl,,they too have been hit,,Really I love them I have alot of flowers planted for nectar for them along with running several feeders,,they nest in my area so mid summer I get to the point that we sometimes go thru 2 gallons of hummer juice a day, with upwards of 40 or more hummers trying to feed,

my poor hummers are being bullies around by some type of wasp. Just started and I feel so bad for them. :(

I have to huge Mexican Sages which they love. I have only one male that comes around. It is great just watching him fly from one bush to the other.

My Hummers hover in front of my face for attention when their feeder is low or the wasps need to be swatted off of it. Where I am living now there are only six, but three years ago I had so many I could count thirty at a time. I was mixing nectar by the gallon. Sure spent a lot of money on sugar that summer! LOL It took years to get that many of course. My son in Law ran a delivery a couple of years ago to a couple who had so many feeders on their porch that you could not get to the door because of the cloud of birds.
Love those little creatures!
