I got this picture last summer and ran across it lately. It is munching away underneath a lotus plant leaf in my backyard water garden. I never noticed what happened to it or what it might have turned into.
Anyone have an idea? I would love to know.
Thanks in advance.
Helen
CLOSED: What is this?
I take that back. It was not on the lotus plant. It looks more like pickerelweed.
This is a saddleback caterpillar (Acharia stimulea; Lepidoptera: Limacodidae). Do not touch it bare-handed, as it has numerous venomous setae on its body. See http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1485/ for detailed information under its old name, Sibine stimulea.
Thanks suunto.
