Meet Onyx

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I gave mine a cuddle today!

Here C, I took some pics for you today.
Here's a little bunch of colored angoras....

OMG Jay! I totally covet the second one from the left with the darker grey back and the lighter grey locks as they go down his/her sides. They are all beautiful. What a gorgeous sky. I can't come down to NM to get it, but that's probably a good thing. I think goat theft is punishable by law.

So how is your little guy? =0)

Here's a mixed group, lincoln and the spotted ones are Navajo Churro...

These folks also have a couple of white or cream colored alpacas... the spinning/rug cooperative in the next valley just got certified last year to grade alpaca fiber. I didn't get their pictures, they were feeling a bit stand-offish and it was windy cold out there.

I think the angoras are 3 does (including the one you covet) and Big Daddy (closest to the camera, of course). And a stray milk goat. I thought they had pretty impressive coats too. =0)

Amazing! I was sure the spotteds were Jacobs, but Navajos make sense. Cool! More coveting!

Big Daddy is a hunk of goaty love.

Onyx is doing so well. Today he was in the barn for the worst of the rain. He loves to run laps around the pasture. Willow watches him all the time, but she has this "stop tiring me out, son" look on her face. He gallops and kicks up his heels. I'm amazed at how agile he is at a mere 3.5 days old. He likes to observe the chickens, from what I can see. Sometimes he does this head flapping thing and his ears go all over and he looks so funny. I love that little guy!

LOL.. Your stray milk goat is an AlpineXNubian. I can tell by the "Airplane Ears". We had one looked just like her.

You're liable to end up like me.... keeping them all! Here's my bunch to welcome the littlest longear...

Wow! Big donkeys! Little Onyx would be dwarfed! Beautiful!

I thought that milk goat looked like she had some Nubian in her!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

I figured it wasn't a pure Oberhaasli, but just kinda the right color, though I imagine O's are even redder? They've got a mess of that kind, pretty surprising for a bunch of probably mutts... but they sure give good milk. =0)

PS C, around here we call those sheep churros. Navajos are a people, and they live around here. I think it might be taken amiss to mix the two up... =0)

As long as you can prove papers on who crossed who they can be registered as grades. If not..... mutts,

However.. If you have a goat that you got say from a rescue or something and have no lineage documentation but it looks like a pure something (for our purposes we'll say a LaMancha), you can get any member of the American Dairy Goat Assoc. to write a letter saying it looks like a LaMancha and it can be registered as a Grade-Native on Appearance. Then if you breed that goat to a registered LaMancha and then those babies get bred to a registered LaMancha, the third generation can be registered as full American LaMancha.

So you can use a "mutt" that looks proper and eventually upgrade your herd.
Just remember the CAE thing and get them tested before you go to all that effort.

This concludes our goat registration class for today!

Oh Ginger, those little kids are adorable!

Oh - send me a d-mail with your blog address so I can check it out!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Ohhh I want some babies, they are so cute..

Congrats Claire, I just found this post, I have been offline for a few days.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Wow, great to learn about the registration info. Thanks. =0)

I went up there yesterday and while I was there I saw a big black Nubian buck with the white snow flake pattern. I've always thought that was just the neatest coat pattern.

Is there any risk to humans from CAE?

Welcome to Dr. Doolittle's Magical Farm on Mount Iowa Onyx!

'We did notice lately that she was looking a little rounded, but we thought she was just hogging the alfalfa hay'. Geesh Claire little Onyx might be a hurt that you thought he was an alfalfa bulge. I just luv his big ears.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Jay - no, there is not a human health risk associated with CAE.

CL, another goat affliction, can cause infection in humans if the bacterium gets into a cut or whatnot, but it's usually a very mild infection that clears up easily.

Dahlia, Onyx gets enough cuddles that I think he's over any issues he had as a result of my calling him an alfalfa bulge! She was not supposed to be pregnant....little hussy....LOL....
