I know this isn't a great picture but it's the best I could get. I saw this fellow the other day in the woods. First time for me to see one so early in our zone.
Thanks a bunch, Ronnie
CLOSED: Butterfly ID Please
This a mourning cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa; Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/ca4vxd for an image of a fresh specimen. They overwinter as adults, and often will emerge from hibernation quite early in the spring (or even during unusually warm winter weather). See http://tinyurl.com/cup54q for detailed information on their biology.
Thank you Suunto. I was out for a walk in the woods and actually felt rather privileged to see it! Glad to know what it was! Thanks for the links too!
LuvsGreatDanes, I disagree with you. That's a GREAT picture of a Mourning Cloak!!! ;-)
Aw thank you Holeth!
