Cotyledon question on rose silk

Aschaffenburg, Germany

I have noticed that pure chocolate nils have green leaves and that rose silk, i.e. chocolate with a picotee edge, have variegated leaves. Can anyone confirm this?

I have a mix of rose silk and chocolate seeds, and of course from the seeds one can't tell, but it should be possible to sort out the pure chocolates from the silky ones by checking the cotyledons if they are uni or bi-coloured....

Hi Martin - I'm not sure that the flower color (as per picotee edge ) will show up in the cotyledons, but relative to the leaves on a mature plant > The general rule of thumb is that if the cotyledon is variegated then the mature leaves will be variegated...there may be some particular exceptions to the rule of thumb, but that has been my experience...

Thanks Ron, I think this is a good rule of thumb. I will watch the cotyledons more closely now because I think they are like prophets telling you about the plant's future.

Ron I take it turbinata and the evening glory alba are different species and cannot be crossed...I was amazed about thebeautiful alba seeds I bought from Onalee and the merremias I got from Emma are almost like a little pebbles...I wonder how long they will take to sprout...

Hi Martin - Yes,you are right Ipomoea alba and Ipomoea turbinata are different species and so far there are no documented instances of these two different species crossing...there were a couple people on the Forums (either here and / or on the GW) that had tried crossing these two without any luck, but they might work for you...try it and see what you get...(!)

It's true that sometimes we have to try inspite of what people say, Ron. This is particulary true with Amaryllis I find. But it has to do with the different clones that are available on the market...so they have different potential. I have done some crosses just on a hunch, and they have worked for me inspite of what people said or advised.

Do you have any ideas on colours within let's say nil? I was wondering if we had the yellow nil and would cross it with a blue, what the results would be colourwise?

I am still trying to get that salmon-coloured, pterides I think, but it's not that easy, just because people are not that interested...it's not a question of language because I do speak Spanish or can make myself understood...

I think one way of how to get this salmon one may be to contact people who live close to its natural habitat and ask them to collect seeds...

Here is a Chocolate vine with yellow leaf . The seller insist on the fact that the leaf are yellow , it's a rare mutation.Firstable when I sow the pic , I'was thinking that the vine need some fertilizer.

Danny, I don't like the leaves either in combination with chocolate, however it may be genetically interesting for crossings with white because you never now what the underlying colours are.

Have you thought about getting a RHS colour chart? They are very expensive I know, but I bought a mini-version with about 100 colours at ebay...just to be able to define the colours better. It's an interesting brown inbetween the one that Emma has and a cocoa, but it does have a lot of white in the centre compared to this one...

Martin - Yes,follow your hunches...sometimes they turn out to be right...

The question regarding the yellow I.nil is somewhat of a moot point because 1st an Ipomoea nil with strong yellow would be necessary...and most of the supposed yellow I.nil is barely yellow at all...

Hope you can locate some people on the Pacific side of lower CEntral America where the Operculina pteripes grows...it would be a welcome addition to the MG's to be enjoyed...
